Video – A Closer Look At The Banded Juvenile – Big Bear Bald Eagle Cam

HNF

-

The banded juvenile eagle came to the nest tree yesterday. This time it decided to land a lot closer. In this video you will see the eagle land towards the top left. The camera operator then pans over and zooms. You can clearly see the finer details, but not quite enough to read the numbers on its federal band. That band is on its right leg. It also has a band on its left leg which is colored and allows us to identify the banding organization. The color of that band is purple meaning the banding organization is in mainland Southern California.

It was decided that this juvenile hatched sometime in 2024. After a Bald Eagle hatches it takes about 6 months before they start molting(the process by which animals shed old parts of their bodies, such as feathers, skin, fur, or shells, to make room for new growth). This Bald Eagle is not showing any signs of molting yet which means it’s most likely younger than 6 months old.
