Two or three days ago, when I distracted the chat with Hemp information (sorry), @Margaret NC asked if I knew what the white-flowered shrub in the pasture and along the woods and stream was… After deep digging (HA), this is as close as I could come: There is a native shrub that looks quite similar, and fits the discription well, so I am going to go with it until someone with better info enlightens me/us: “Potentila fruticosa, commonly called ‘Shrubby cinquefoil’, is a vigorous, floriferous, many-branched, compact, deciduous shrub that is native to northern parts of the U.S., Canada, Europe… Read more »

Maybe an Eastern Kingbird doing the dive-bombing. One of the common neighbors who also nest nearby. Really pretty – hope we get to see them closeup.

I have seen Eastern Kingbirds land on a hawks back, in flight, and peck the top of its head. They can be fierce adversaries

I’ve watched in slo-mo a few times and think I’m catching a crest at some angles. Could be the Blue Jays…not that it makes a difference.😎

Well, there’s that, too! Perhaps we’ll get a better view. In past seasons they seemed to nest on the streamside, and were fierce defenders of their territory, mainly above the Brush Pile. Don’t ya love getting to see all the neighbors? Can’t wait for the Turkey Vultures, and then all the visitors that pass through in August.

The Jays were giving both of them heck while the nest was still intact.
Wouldn’t bet money either way.

At times they pay the price. Remember Angel, the leucistic Red Tailed Hawk?
The Jays were a plague early last season, dive bombing Angel and her little one.
Later in the season, Angel was bringing young Blue Jays to the nest day after day. I believe they consumed the entire brood. The parent Jays were still relentless in their attacks.

Yes. A few of us posted pics of Angel on the Decorah site.
Was looking forward to another season but it wasn’t meant to be.
Both returned to the nest this year, began doing nest work…then disappeared.

If so, they are protecting their territory; great dive-bombers, but the eagles just consider them a nuisance. They’ve always nested in the tall pasture grass in seasons past. When you see a small bird “escorting” the eagles as they fly across the pasture, it is often a Red-winged Black Bird.

So many kinds of sparrows in the neighborhood – who can tell?! And then add the sparrow look-a-likes. All I can tell is that it looks like a young one.

Sparrows can be difficult without a sharply focused close up.
My inclination was song sparrow.

How many different kinds of sparrows are there?
“When it comes to sparrows, there are more than 50 different species of them. “Sparrow” is a term that covers a variety of small, brown/grey birds. They range in size and color, but often have the same distinguishable characteristics of a stout body, rounded wings, and a broad head.”

The day ends – midnight shows one of the Es perched in the Burr Oak in front of the nest tree at the edge of the pasture – I’m not sure where the other one is, nor the parents…
A calm day ahead with light showers beginning at 3pm until around midnight, hopefully giving the Es some relief from the black flies.

Hi Sharon!!! Yep, everyone is so thankful. If it was going to happen, the timing was indeed fortunate. I think we will still watch a successful dispersal of two healthy eagles in a few weeks. Lots of fun until then! Stop by when you can.
