Brownie, this is so funny! They said on FB that the male has brought about 36 turtles to the nest so far. Some of the shells are buried in the nest. He’s a real collector (or hoarder). 😂

Never have seen so many turtles brought to an eagles nest. Watched Kincaid grow up here last year. Kincaid’s parents brought loads of fish, but not that many turtles. Maybe there is a big supply of turtles right now because of the failure of multiple nests in this area, so there are less adults around to eat the turtles. Fish is supposed to make up the majority of an eagle’s diet, but this male seems to favor turtles, lol.

Hope no other eagles here die from rodenticide if that toxic chemical is still being used at a home or business near these nests.

So sad that they cremated Anna for nothing. Andria didn’t have bird flu and Anna probably didn’t either, especially since Anna’s test turned out to be not positive for bird flu, and the rangers had walked around the lake looking for evidence of other dead birds that may have had avian influenza, but they couldn’t find any. Anna most likely had rodenticide exposure too from prey obtained from the same general area. Tragic loss of two strong eagle mom’s and their offspring. 😢

Thanks for posting the results, Tina. I hope that the local news broadcasters publicize what happened to Andria. They should have public service announcements on TV to educate the public on how rat poison can kill animals further up on the food chain (foxes, raptors, dogs, cats, etc). One time when I was a kid, our dog accidentally got loose and ran into the neighbor’s yard. Shortly after he returned home, he got sick and died of poisoning symptoms. My parents said that the neighbor used to use rat poison in their barn, and they felt that this was what… Read more »

I was reading some websites about that rodenticide yesterday. New South Wales had a mice plague in 2021, and the farmers there were refusing to use this chemical because of how it kills other species. The US FDA knows that this chemical is dangerous for other species, especially raptors. It’s a second generation rodenticide, which means the chemical keeps building up in the rodent who is eating it, and it takes 5 to 7 days of eating it to kill the rodent, which makes it more toxic than other rodenticides. Nevertheless, the FDA has approved the use of this chemical… Read more »

Tragic, and there are other options for sure. I am a farm girl and I always have a problem with some of this stuff. I will have to check with the people I know at Farm Bureau. Remember when DDT was outlawed….

Yes, I remember hearing about DDT long ago, Rachel Carson and the thinning eggshells. Years ago, I was speaking with a Quality Control Dept. of a U.S. organic canned food company and they told me that they rejected a batch of black pepper that came from another country because the pepper had too much DDT. I read that even though DDT is banned here, other countries are still using up their supply of DDT. India is still producing DDT.

Both eagle pairs have been bringing branches to the nest. One of the eagles at the E-3 nest brought in a huge branch and spent about 8 minutes dragging it all around the nest. lol

Yes, maybe next year at eagle mating season. About Andria – they were saying that the remains have to be sent to another federal eagle lab (I think in Washington DC) who will review the report from Atlanta lab and then they will make the final determination. They said it could take a couple of months more.

An eagle pair has been stopping by at each of these nests. At the E-3 (Alex’s) nest, the eagles stop by to aerate the nest and then leave. At the E-1 (Louis’s) nest, an eagle pair aerates the nest, move around sticks, and eat in the nest. Seems he is learning about the ‘fish gift’ concept. Two days ago, the male flew to the nest with a fish, but then he flew off when she flew in, and she was chasing him trying to get the fish he had.Today, the male brought a fish to the nest which was dangling… Read more »
