Zoo Atlanta 7/20/2018 There’s a lot more that goes into eating bamboo than you might think … #ZAPandas #OnlyZooATL Bamboo is the giant panda’s primary food, but they don’t just eat any old bamboo. Pandas are very selective about the type and parts of the bamboo that they eat. Because they have to put so much effort into processing bamboo (breaking, stripping, peeling, etc), the giant pandas only eat the most nutritious bamboo. They can’t afford to burn up all of the calories they obtain from the bamboo just by eating it. Pandas are able to determine the nutrition level… Read more »

Just like any other behavior we ask of them, if they complete the behavior (i.e., eat bamboo), they receive a leafeater biscuit or a piece of produce as reinforcement. The pandas will often eat an entire meal of bamboo, which they otherwise wouldn’t have touched, during a training session. Why would the training make a difference if the bamboo is sub-par? I believe it works for two reasons: 1) reinforcing a behavior, by definition, means that the behavior will increase if reinforced, and 2) the biscuits and produce likely make up some of the nutritional deficits of the bamboo. Hello……it’s been a breezy, cooler day and had some rain earlier…but we took the dogs for a ride anyway…had a few stops to make and walked them at the cemetery. I’m relaxing on my porch now, might even take a little nap….was up pretty late because my stomach didn’t feel that great after eating so much….I really didn’t need the two extra things…salad and dessert…the meal would have been enough. It really doesn’t feel like summer today, hope it comes back soon…I”d like to go swimming again…at my neighbor’s pool and at lake with DH. DH went to a dinner… Read more »

I am glad you are feeling better after your big meal last night. You are not use to eating all that food at one sitting. A swim at the lake with DH is a good way to spend a summer afternoon. Go for it!!!! . Orange cake sounds delicious. Have a nice evening Lynn. Good night. ♥

Glad you had a relaxing day. I wish I didn’t want to eat so much. When I was younger I could never finish a restaurant meal and always took home some. So I used to be able to eat all I wanted, because my “want” would stop at a certain point. Now I can eat everything in sight. As a result, I am now gaining weight. bigfrown Ah well, ..Plus I need to exercise more since Rose really isn’t going for walks anymore. One more thing to do. LOL
