I haven’t visited here in more than two weeks. The owlets have grown a lot. The way they like to huddle in one corner, I can’t tell if there are four still living or only three.

I’ve pretty much stopped watching this cam because it either no longer is viewable or only briefly. I did just peek in and can confirm as of today, there are four. I’ve been enjoying the GHO cams. Ellie’s chicks hatched last week so plenty of time to enjoy and the view of the nest is very good.

Viewers – At least one cam view is not recent. One on lower right has date 4-18-24.

Very sad, and repulsive. Out of nine, we’ve only got four owlets left. Nothing is guaranteed; we may see only two or three actually fledge. I was surprised to see the mother eat so much of the rat and her own baby, too. I would’ve thought she would feed on something while hunting, before bringing food home for her kids.

Chances are good for the four given all are able to eat on their own. There seems to be enough prey being dropped off.

Shocked to see #5 has died today. On scroll back last seen alive about 04:23. First saw it deceased at 10am middle of floor. Only brief views as Mom blocking view. There was a rat in pantry but looked too big for #5 to swallow. Wha looked to be a possibility is that I saw some owlets behind Mom seeming busy with something on the floor. I wondered if it was #5 but then saw an owlet in the mix, step out with a rat and head to lower left corner with it. That seemed to get other owlets going… Read more »

Don’t you wish they would only lay 3-4 eggs at a time? I sure do!

Thanking Dev for reporting on youngest owlet. Watching on scroll back, I can confirm that youngest began dying (starvation I’m pretty sure) over a period of time most visible starting at 03:28:07 through 03:49 ish. Last view of it sitting up was about 03:06. Next clear view it was lying flat at 03:28:07. Mom picked it up at 03:51:05 and it became nourishment. So we now have five. I only saw two food drops during the night. They were mice it looked like. Older sibs consumed them. Remaining youngest is now at risk. We’ll just have to see how the… Read more »

Thanks Lin, that kind of matches what I saw during one of the really bad years at another cam. In that case the Mother appeared to wait on a dying owlet until it appeared to pass, and only then began to ready it for the others to consume. Maybe her wait was biology, maybe it was some form of compassion? Who can say? We can only observe, learn, and feel our own compassion for these lovely creatures.

Was that one of the younger siblings being eaten by an older one at around 4:11 4/19/24 onward? Or maybe it was a bird from elsewhere brought in by the parent?

Hi Dev. Thank you so much for the cam time. I’m still observing scroll back and will post something soon. Yes, it was the smallest owlet that was consumed.

Good views of owlets including tinies from 01:23 to 01:27 cam time today. You can see the the remaining tiny one at lower left of older sibs. I posted previously that there were three older and three tinies. I see now that it is actually four olders, one younger and one tiny.

Hey everyone,
When possible, would love if you would include cam time whenever you post something you saw on the cam. That way other viewers (like me🙂) can try to find it on scroll back. Provides a great learning opportunity. Thanks💛

I think so. Brief view of two smalls with four bigger sibs at 11:21p to 11:22p on the 18th. Kind of blurry pic but can see the two smalls on left. Will be a miracle if the tiniest doesn’t get eaten in the next few days.

11:31ish cam time, one scarfs down the remainder of the mole or vole.

11:19:39 viewers might think one of the smaller one’s is being eaten. Wasn’t though. It looked like a mole or vole.

Oh no!! Looks like newly hatch owl is getting eaten it’s sibling. Sad but bound to happen with so many any such a difference in size.

Hi Traci. Was that cam time? I scrolled from 11:17 thru 11:23 but didn’t see any sibling being eaten. Took some pics after 11:23 and saw three of the tiniest. Hard to see all given size of older ones. This is the period I dread and may need to stop watching for a time. Older ones are already swallowing small prey whole and littles may not get enough.

Could of been mistaken about little one getting eaten as I still see him. He was definitely in the mouth of another one. Didn’t actually see him get swallowed because camera got glitchy. I’m hoping all make it.

Per HNF: 8 of the 9 eggs have hatched. If the 9th egg is going to hatch most likely it will be today or tomorrow. Dad has been doing good at providing food and as of right now all of the owlets are thriving. So far so good! 🥰 1st egg 2/26/24 – Hatched 3/29/24 2nd egg 2/28/24 – Hatched 3/31/24 3rd egg 3/01/24 – Hatched 4/02/24 4th egg 3/03/24 – Hatched 4/04/24 5th egg 3/05/24 – Hatched 4/06/24 6th egg 3/07/24 – Hatched 4/08/24 7th egg 3/09/24 – Hatched 4/10/24 8th egg 3/11/24 – Hatched 4/12/24 9th egg 3/14/24… Read more »
