-It’s almost that time of year where the canal closes for the winter. This usually occurs sometime in January every year. The Philip R. Clarke made its way through the canal yesterday for the last time this season. It’s here to get loaded down with iron ore pellets which will be off loaded somewhere at another port in the great lakes.
More about the Philip R. Clarke:
The ship is named after Philip R. Clarke, a key figure in the Great Lakes shipping industry. He was president of the Pittsburgh Steamship Company and chairman of the Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation.
The Philip R. Clarke is a long-serving bulk carrier, transporting iron ore pellets and featuring self-unloading systems. It was lengthened by 120 feet in the winter of 1974-75 making it 767 feet long.
