Pot Plant Owls – Johannesburg, South Africa

You are watching live streaming video of a Spotted Eagle Owls nest, better known as “The Pot Plant Owls“. This nest has been built in a potted plant on the camera owners balcony. The Eagle Owls have returned to this nesting site every year since 2008 to raise their brood.

About this nest – The female will lay from 3-4 eggs 48 hours apart and begin a 30 day incubation period after the last egg is laid. The owlets will fledge after about 55-70 days from hatching. Read more about this pair of Spotted Eagle Owls at the pot plant Owl blog.

Pot Plant Owl

GOOD NEWS! bigsmile Pappa was spotted on our rooftop this evening. He didn’t hoot so we didn’t hear or see anything but neighbours saw him. A few other people in the area also saw him tonight and let us know. Apparently, Pappa is flying well! blowkiss

18 Jan update:

Here’s a recent picture of Pappa. Brendan from Owl Rescue Centre isn’t convinced that he has Trich. His right eye needs attention but he’s looking okay..especially for his age that we estimate at 16 years old.

Thank you for your kind donations. We return on Sunday so on Monday we will forward all payments to owl / wildlife ‘Angels’.

Hi PPO followers. Thank you for the donations.

Update – Pappa has been seen flying strongly in the complex, but his eye is still puffy. So the rescuers will continue with the efforts to catch him. Allan.

Update on the search for Pappa:

The search continues for Pappa. People in our area have photographed an owl on their roof and have said that during the year, Pappa does visit them.

This is certainly hopeful if not definitive that this is indeed Pappa. We can only keep a look out, keep the conversation going in the area, and remain quietly optimistic.

Again, thank you for all your kindness and support!

From Tracey & Allen on Facebook: Pot Plant Owl 1/11/2019 Pappa hasn’t been seen in the last couple of days. This is not uncommon out of breeding season for Pappa not to be around. Based on how well he has been flying, we remain hopeful that he is okay and can fight off any secondary infection. Thank you to everyone for your concern and comments. This tragedy has given Tracy and I a different owl focus. I will be spreading the word about Trich in South Africa to help eradicate it. Tracy is a writer and has had many PPO… Read more »

Pot Plant Owl (from Facebook)

1/10/2019

The local community newspaper published an article calling for residents to be on the lookout for Pappa. We received a photo of him on a roof in the neighbouring complex. He is still flying strongly but has not returned to our area.

Unfortunately we also received confirmation that Lady has died. Her body has been found. cry cry

Regards from Allan.

So sad! I have not commented but have been watching since mom laid the unviable eggs and then adopted the two.Can someone let me know, have both owletts passed? I know one did. And how about mom? I see they are trying to rescue Pappa. It was such an amazing journey to see how this family was developing and how mischievous (in a good way) the two were.

From Tracey & Allen on Facebook: Pot Plant Owl 1/9/2019 Rescue efforts to catch Pappa have been unsuccessful because he’s been flying too well. Unfortunately Pappa has now disappeared. Every effort is being made to find him. The local newspaper has run a story about Pappa so the whole community is involved. I’ll keep you all posted. I’ve been asked by PPO followers to give you our suggestions for donations to help with the rescue efforts. Individuals like Brendan from the Owl Rescue Centre and our neighbours are driving around paying for their own fuel / gas, looking for Pappa.… Read more »
