Purple Martin Nest Cam

You are watching a live broadcast of Purple Martins nesting. Located on the Maurice River in New Jersey,  this nest is in an artificial gourd hanging from an aluminum rack. Purple Martins are the largest North American Swallow. Along the eastern United States, Purple Martins rely almost entirely on artificial housing from humans to reproduce. Purple Martins migrate to the Amazon basin during the winter months. Purple martins suffered a major population crash in the 20th century widely linked to the release and spread of European Starlings in North America. Starlings and House Sparrows compete with martins for nest cavities. Where purple martins once gathered by the thousands, by the 1980s they had all but disappeared. How do you get Purple Martins to come to a nesting sight. I have had a Purple Martin Nest that the previous owners put up high in the sky. But have yet to see any nesting in there. Is there anyway to draw their attention. I am from Michigan. I know we have them or used to. Any ideas ??

First you have to make sure the nest is cleaned out at the end of nesting season (in the fall) Have you cleaned it out since you have moved there ?? Also at the beginning of season you have to make sure starlings and sparrows dont get in there to nest before the Martins come back. Best way to do that is cover the hole or not put the box up until then. Hope some of this helps good luck… contentsmile
