๐Ÿšข Meet the SS Alpena!
Built in 1942 by the Great Lakes Engineering Works, the SS Alpena (formerly the SS Leon Fraser) is a lake freighter. Originally owned by the Pittsburgh Steamship Company, she was designed to transport iron ore.

๐Ÿ”„ Transformation Over the Years
The ship has had multiple transformations:

  • Started hauling grain and ore in the 1960s and 1970s.
  • In 1982, she was put into storage.
  • In 1989, Fraser Shipyards purchased and converted her into a cement carrier.
  • In 1990, New Management Enterprises renamed her as Alpena and used her for cement transportation.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Surviving the Odds
In 2015, she was the oldest active steamship on the Great Lakes. Despite being damaged by a fire in the same year, she continues to be operational till date under Andrie Transportation Group and Inland Lakes Management.
