The American Mariner made its way out of the harbor last night with help from tug Missouri to break ice up. The American Mariner looks to be on its way to Buffalo, NY.

About the ship:

MV American Mariner is a diesel-powered lake freighter owned by the American Steamship Company (ASC). Built in 1980, it features self-unloading technology and measures 730 feet in length and 78 feet in width, with a carrying capacity of 37,300 tons for materials like limestone and coal.

The ship was originally to be named Chicago and was launched on August 2, 1979, in honor of American seafarers.

On April 28, 2000, it lost steering in Lake Huron, causing it to hit a navigational light, resulting in significant damage and flooding. After temporary repairs, the vessel was refloated, but channel closures affected other ships.

On March 28, 2024, the Mariner struck a navigational aid in Munuscong Lake, blocking the channel. It was later cleared to proceed to Ashtabula for repairs, with no injuries or pollution reported.
