The Manitoulin Arrived early yesterday afternoon to load up on fuel and iron ore pellets.

🚢 **The Manitoulin:** This beast of a freighter arrived early yesterday afternoon to load fuel and iron ore pellets. It’s a 664-foot self-unloading bulk carrier, Canadian-flagged, and has a carrying capacity of 27,550 tons. It’s the first new river class self-unloader in the Great Lakes service in over 40 years. ⚙️

💪 **Impressive Stats:** The Manitoulin boasts the largest carrying capacity of any existing river class self-unloader, making it the most efficient vessel of its class on the Great Lakes. Its cargo includes grain, iron ore, coal, soybeans, and other bulk commodities. 🌽

🏢 **Operated by Lower Lakes Towing Ltd.**: This subsidiary of Rand Logistics operates the Manitoulin. The vessel, christened in China, entered service in the Great Lakes Region after more than two years of project planning, shipbuilding, and transport. 🌎

🛠️ **Built from Lalandia Swan:** The Manitoulin was built from the stern section of a Danish-flagged saltwater chemical tanker named Lalandia Swan. Rand Logistics purchased this in March 2014 and attached a new self-unloading bow section. The vessel conversion project also included constructing a new forebody. The work was managed at the renowned Chengxi Shipyard in Jiangyin, China. 🇨🇳
