Video – Algoma Strongfield Arrives & Walter J McCarthy Jr departs In Duluth 7/11/24

The Algoma Strongfield arrived for Iron ore pellets and and the Walter J McCarthy Jr departed loaded down with coal.

Here’s a brief on the two vessels:

🚢 **Algoma Strongfield**: This was the 4th ship in the Equinox class, originally built for the Canadian Wheat Board. After the Nantong Shipyard’s bankruptcy, Algoma Central bought it and completed its construction. Launched as the CWB Strongfield, it is now an active participant in the seaway ore and grain trades.

🚢 **Walter J McCarthy Jr**: Built in 1977 for American Steamship, it was initially named Belle River. The ship faced a major accident in 2008, sustaining a huge gash in the hull. After a $4.7 million lawsuit, it was repaired and returned to service. Tragically, in January 2022, a crew member died due to an injury sustained off the coast of Gary, Indiana.
