The U. S. Coast Guard must maintain a heavy icebreaking capability on the Great Lakes to keep channels and harbors open for winter shipping. The CGC MAWCKINAW (WLBB-30) is the only heavy icebreaker on the Great Lakes, designed for multiple missions with advanced systems, continuing the legacy of CGC MACKINAW (WAGB-83).
