What happened
The evening of November 6, 2025, two Great Horned Owls (GHOs) landed in the Decorah North eagle nest, traded a lively set of hoots, and then lifted off into nearby trees. The Decorah North eagle nest (pair: Mr. North & DNF) sits in a white oak on private property north of Decorah, Iowa, along a valley edge.
Why would owls use an eagle nest?
- No nest-building required: GHOs don’t build their own nests; they reuse stick nests built by other raptors/corvids.
- Pre-season scouting: Fall/early winter visits can be site checks for late-winter egg-laying (GHOs often lay Jan–Feb in the upper Midwest).
- High, sturdy platform: An established eagle nest offers height, cover, and structure with good sightlines.
Is this a problem for Mr. North & DNF?
- Timing matters: Bald eagles in Iowa typically refurbish and defend nests late fall → winter, with eggs often Feb–March. Territorial displays or in-nest presence by eagles usually discourages GHOs.
- Outcome varies: Short visits are common and don’t guarantee takeover. If eagles begin consistent occupancy, GHOs usually move on to alternate sites.
Behavior notes from this clip
- Duet/“conversation”: Paired GHOs often counter-hoot; the deeper voice is typically the male, the higher pitch the female.
- Short perch tenure: Perch → vocalize → depart is classic prospecting behavior rather than immediate nesting commitment.
What to watch next
- Eagle reclaims: Look for Mr. North or DNF bringing sticks/greens, perching overnight, or vocalizing from the nest tree.
- Repeat owl visits: Multiple pre-dawn appearances or material manipulation by GHOs increases the odds they’re serious.
- Escalation: If both species want the platform, expect vocal contests, dive-by passes, or displacement—common in mixed raptor neighborhoods.
FAQs
Is this an owl nest or an eagle nest?
It’s the eagle pair’s nest. GHOs were visitors in this video.
Do owls and eagles share nests?
Not simultaneously. The first species to occupy and defend usually prevails.
Will humans intervene?
Decorah North is a wild cam; the norm is non-intervention unless there’s a specific management or safety issue.
