Chickadee Nest Cam
You are watching a live cam of wild Chestnut-backed Chickadees nesting. This nest cam is located in San Fransisco, California. Chestnut-backed chickadees can be found all along the west coast of North America. Nest building starts with intense activity making many trips to prepare the nest for eggs. After the first two days, their work slows down, and they spend time away from the nest more. Once the nest is finished, the female roosts on it at night, preparing to laying eggs. She stays at the nest from dusk until dawn, only adding soft materials during the day.

About 24 hours or less before laying the last egg, she begins incubating. She will only take bathroon breaks and to eat. The male occasionally brings her food. Eggs are incubated for 13-16 days and all eggs hatch within 1 or 2 days of each other.
Both parents feed the young continuously during the day, and the chicks grow quickly. The mother roosts over them at night until they develop feathers. The young fledge knowing how to fly and leave the nest without returning.
