Eggciting times are ahead at the NCTC nest! It’s been about 34 days of incubation for the first of three eggs. Bald Eagle eggs usually start to hatch after about 34-36 days of incubation. Be on the lookout for a “PIP” in one of the eggs. A PIP is a small hole created in the shell by the eagle chicks beak and it’s a sure sign of hatching. Once a PIP develops a hatch is usually within 24 hours.
Looking back: Last year was a difficult one for this nest. Three eggs were laid just like this season. The first egg went too long without being incubated and didn’t hatch. The other two eggs did hatch, but not long after hatching the male eagle decided to unalive the eaglets.. Yikes… Since then much was talked about regarding why an eagle would consume its young like that. The general consensus that we gathered was that the male was too young. With that we hope this year brings success and that the male has matured enough to raise eaglets if that’s the case. Stay tuned and don’t forget to sign up for our email updates! 🥰
