Well, I had a feeling that if I didn’t watch the nest for a day, that day would be the day that Lil fledges. Congratulations to Lil on a very smooth and successful fledge and a return to the nest on the same day (November 7th Sydney time)! SK Hideaways posted an excellent video of Lil’s fledge on You Tube. So happy for Lil. Big flew back to the nest first to show Lil how to return.
Quick recap
- Milestone: Lil fledged and returned to the nest on the same day — November 7, 2025 (Sydney time).
- Sibling assist: Big reportedly flew back first, appearing to “demonstrate” the return route.
What “fledge” means (and why it matters)
Fledging is a chick’s first real flight from the nest. Successful fledges with same-day returns are strong indicators of good wing strength, coordination, and situational awareness. It also marks the start of short practice flights and skills building around the territory.
Timeline (Sydney time)
- Morning–midday, Nov 7: Lil takes a confident first flight.
- Later the same day: Lil returns to the nest platform. Big is observed returning first, then Lil follows.
What to watch next
- Short hops & perching: Expect Lil to work on landings, balancing and short “branching” flights.
- Food transfers: Deliveries may occur on nearby perches as flight control improves.
- Sibling dynamics: Look for mirroring behavior—Big and Lil often cue off each other.
- Vocal cues: Increased contact calls while they orient to new perches and flight paths.
Frequently asked
Did Lil “fail” by returning?
No—same-day returns are common and healthy. Early flights often end back at the nest or a nearby perch.
When do young birds stop using the nest?
Typically over days to weeks after fledging, as confidence grows and food is delivered on outlying perches.
