Powerful gusts rocked the platform. Loose branches lifted into the air, and by the end of the storm, powerful winds had stripped away part of the nest’s outer rail.

The night began peacefully at the Hellgate Osprey nest. Clark rested on the perch beside the nest while Iris remained with their chick below. Just before the weather changed, Clark flew down to join his family. Seconds later, lightning illuminated the darkness and thunder echoed across the valley.
Nothing hinted that the quiet evening would give way to one of the most dramatic weather events the Hellgate Osprey nest would see all season.
As the wind strengthened, all three birds stirred. The chick stood and stretched its growing wings while the adults shifted their footing against increasingly powerful gusts. Heavy rain soon followed, soaking every stick and feather as the storm intensified around them. Then the nest itself became part of the story. Wind Tears Through the Hellgate Osprey Nest
As the worst of the storm settled over the Hellgate Osprey nest, Iris, Clark and Wensi huddled together against the driving rain. The family briefly separated several times as one parent disappeared into the darkness before returning to the nest. Each reunion lasted only a short while before another departure, while lightning continued to flash overhead and powerful gusts rattled the exposed platform.
Through it all, Wensi remained tucked low in the nest bowl, sheltered by whichever parent stayed behind. Rain continued to pour as the exposed nest swayed beneath the family’s feet and the overnight storm refused to let up. After enduring the worst of the weather, Wensi finally stood and shook vigorously, sending water flying from growing feathers before settling once again beside the adults. It was a small but reassuring moment after a long night of wind and rain.

Wensi Faces the First Major Storm of Young Life
The dramatic overnight storm came only days after the young chick at the Hellgate Osprey nest officially received a name. The chick is now known as Wensi, the English phonetic spelling of the Salish name Wénš, meaning “dancer.” The Montana Osprey Project and members of the Salish people chose the name, continuing a recent tradition of giving Hellgate nestlings Salish names in recognition of the area’s Indigenous heritage.
The name reflects the grace and beauty often associated with ospreys. Within days of receiving it, however, Wensi encountered a very different milestone as lightning, pounding rain and relentless wind swept across the exposed nest.
By morning, rain had soaked the nest, part of the outer rail was gone, and the storm had left its mark. Iris, Clark and Wensi had faced the night together. It was another reminder that life at the Hellgate Osprey nest is shaped as much by the storms a family endures as the milestones it celebrates.
