Current Big Bear Eagle Update

The eagles typically lay eggs in late January. Incubation, hatching, and early chick rearing run through late winter and early spring.

Over the years, Jackie and Shadow have become fan favorites as viewers watch them overcome storms, snow, heat, and the occasional raven or intruding eagle. Their nest sits more than a mile above sea level in the San Bernardino Mountains. Here, changing weather at Big Bear Lake can bring bright sunshine one day and heavy snow the next. That dramatic setting makes every visit to the Big Bear Eagle cam a little different. You may see calm sunrise lake views or intense wind and snow events that test the nest.

A couple of you mentioned you were in the market for a new printer. After reading, studying, googling, etc I just ordered one. Epson tank inkjet 2980. The tank printers cost more up front but over time, depending on how much printing you do, you will recoup the extra cost in savings on ink cartridges. You might be more interested in the 2900. If you google and find models like 2800, etc, they are older models. The second number should be a 9, not 8.

That was Shadow in the nest, not Kaydee. That’s why I stated that the eagle in the photo (Shadow) had no bands on his feet and no brown feathers on his head. That’s how to tell that it is not Kaydee.

BOTH. Thanks Mary that is good news. I put more importance on nest activity, even a short time, than hanging together on a tree

They said that usually the nest building in Big Bear is in October and November, so Kaydee is a little bit early. Since this is her first nest, she probably doesn’t know how long it takes to build. She’s brought sticks four times already, but Shadow hasn’t brought any. I think that he knows from experience that it’s not time to do serious nest work quite yet. As it gets a bit colder and the days get shorter, he should start bringing sticks and spending more time on it.

Thanks for that info Mary. I know Kaydee is young and new, but good to see she is motivated. She will learn but I expect there will be rough times. I don’t think I have experience with a new female, but I did with a new male. It was M15 first season at SWFL which also was my first EVER live cam experience with any creature at all! M and I sure had a long learning curve. He learned so much that first season. I however, was a slow learner!

sorry debbie but it was not M15s first season the number after his name is the year he first made babies at that nest, 2015 his mate F23 joined him in 2023 after Harriet went missing

Kaydee sure is a determined persistent eagle. When F23 mated with M15 in 2023, she was a newly mature adult. She still had some brown feathers on her head. For her first brood, one egg broke and didn’t hatch and the other egg hatched and fledged (E23). I don’t know if it broke because she was an inexperienced mom and put too much pressure on the egg when snuggling to keep the eggs warm. She did better with her second brood (E24 and E25), but unfortunately both eaglets caught avian influenza. With her third brood, one egg remained whole but… Read more »

Thanks for that recount Mary, I had not looked at records enough to put it all together. I suspect it will be a bit of a learning curve with Kaydee also, but I am optimistic she will become a much loved mama, that is, if Shadow and her do bond. I am optimistic about that to.

You’re welcome, Debbie. As of now, it’s looking very promising for them to bond. There haven’t been any other mature female eagles going to the nest or pursuing Shadow. If another female arrived, she would probably have to battle Kaydee for the nest since it seems that Kaydee has already claimed the nest as her own. If a younger mature male eagle came to claim Kaydee and attacked Shadow (like what happened between M15 and Ozzie at SWFL), then anything could happen. But it’s my strong hope (fingers and toes crossed), that all will continue to be peaceful at Big… Read more »

Agreed!! The latest Lady Hawk video showed them together on the nest early evening, doing the body bump thing!! Another sign of bonding. So exciting, and in the same sentence, Queen Jackie is looking down on all of us, especially Shadow💜
