The eagles typically lay eggs in late January. Incubation, hatching, and early chick rearing run through late winter and early spring.
Over the years, Jackie and Shadow have become fan favorites as viewers watch them overcome storms, snow, heat, and the occasional raven or intruding eagle. Their nest sits more than a mile above sea level in the San Bernardino Mountains. Here, changing weather at Big Bear Lake can bring bright sunshine one day and heavy snow the next. That dramatic setting makes every visit to the Big Bear Eagle cam a little different. You may see calm sunrise lake views or intense wind and snow events that test the nest.

While we are waiting for Shadow and Kaydee to start the nest building process, this is a beautiful, amazing video about nest building. The majority is about different types of bird nests from around the world (including bald eagles), but they also include a few examples of nests of insects and mammals.
Mother Nature’s animal kingdom, so amazing. Thanks for the video.
you’re welcome, ML
18:36 Shadow flew into the nest and Kaydee joined him shortly after that. They only stayed a couple of minutes. It seems that they are just checking out the nest each evening. Not doing nestorations yet.

“This morning in the wee hours, a quiet meteor flashed across the night sky. It moved at incredible speed, vanishing in the blink of an eye while the inhabitants of the valley slept,” FOBBV wrote. “This is another reminder of the beautiful land that our eagles and friends inhabit. Nature surrounds us everywhere; in the skies, in the trees, and beyond.”
Thanks ML! That is really awesome!
You are welcome, RR. Sure is.
A little more about this meteor: The Draconid meteor shower occurs annually from October 6 to October 10, with its peak typically around October 8-9. This meteor shower is named after the constellation Draco, and is caused by the Comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner. As this comet travels through space, it sheds particles composed of ice and rocky fragments, and when Earth intersects this trail of debris, the particles enter our atmosphere at high speeds, burning up and creating meteors. So neat that they were able to capture this photo! Thanks, ML.
I’m never so lucky to see anything, always cloudy, foggy, raining… Oh well, one day it will happened. Thanks for the meteor shower info.
You’re welcome, ML. Back in 1966, several of my family members and I saw a huge green ball with a big tail passing overhead. We actually could hear a hissing sound as it flew over. It was still fairly light out when we watched it. The authorities said that it was a meteor and that it had landed in Canada. People from a lot of different states saw it. I also saw a fairly low green meteor on the way driving home from work more than 10 years ago. That one fizzled out as I watched it. During one of… Read more »
Oh wow what a great experience, but the hissing sound will scare me for sure. Great experience for you Mary, thanks for sharing it.
We could tell that the hissing sound was from the object burning up. It moved across the sky at a slow enough speed that we called my mom to come outside and see it, and she was able to see it too. We didn’t know what it was at the time. Back then there was a lot of talk about UFOs, and we were wondering if it was a UFO that had crashed to the earth, lol. From our viewpoint, it looked like it had come down in North Jersey, but then we heard on the news the next day,… Read more »
That hissing sound probably I will remember it forever… Yikes!
