- Egg #1: HM2 laid the first egg on February 17, 2026, at about 6:33 p.m. CT.

- DH3 hatched: March 27 at about 7:01 a.m. CT.
- DH4 hatched: March 29, giving HD and HM2 two eaglets at Nest N6.
- Both eaglets fledged: June 18. DH4 left the nest at about 5:45 a.m., while DH3 also fledged later that day.
- DH3: was later admitted to SOAR with a soft-tissue wing injury. The latest official update reported no wing or leg fractures, very low blood lead levels, weight gain, and continued rehabilitation in a flight pen.
- DH4: was last seen or heard on the morning of July 28. RRP noted that her increasingly long absences were consistent with the wider ranging young eagles often show before dispersal, although her exact location was unknown.
About the Decorah Eagles
The current adult pair at the Decorah Fish Hatchery is HD (Hatchery Dad) and HM2 (Hatchery Mom II). HD has occupied and defended the hatchery territory for years. HM2 became his mate after the loss of Hatchery Mom (HM), beginning another chapter in the long history of bald eagles nesting around the Decorah trout hatchery.
HD and HM2 spent much of 2025 strengthening their pair bond and working on potential nest sites. By late 2025, the pair had clearly adopted Nest N6, setting the stage for their successful 2026 nesting season.
Decorah Nest N6
N6 is the sixth nest associated with the chain of Decorah Hatchery Eagles. It sits near the Decorah Fish Hatchery and became the primary nest for HD and HM2 after the pair explored and worked on multiple nesting locations.
The Raptor Resource Project (RRP) installed cameras near both N5 and N6 while the eagles were deciding where to settle. By early December 2025, HD and HM2 had adopted N6, and the new Decorah Eagle Cam was brought online ahead of egg laying in February 2026.
What to Watch for on the Decorah Eagle Cam
The Decorah Eagle Cam can be active even outside the egg and eaglet stages of the nesting season. HD and HM2 may return to N6 to perch, inspect the nest, defend their territory, or begin moving sticks and nesting material as another breeding season approaches.
Activity often comes in bursts. Long quiet stretches can be followed by an eagle arrival, vocal exchange, food delivery, territorial encounter, or sudden round of nest work. Early morning and late afternoon can be especially interesting times to check the cam, although eagle activity can occur throughout the day.
Decorah Eagle Nesting Season Timeline
- Fall: pair bonding, territory defense, and increasing nest work may begin.
- Winter: nest preparation and courtship become more intense as breeding season approaches.
- February: HD and HM2 laid their two 2026 eggs on February 17 and February 21.
- Late March: DH3 and DH4 hatched on March 27 and March 29.
- Spring: eaglets grow rapidly while the adults deliver food and protect the nest.
- Early summer: young eagles begin branching, exercising their wings, and preparing for first flight.
- Post-fledge: juveniles remain around the territory while improving their flight and feeding skills before eventually dispersing.

What happened to DH3?
DH3 fledged on June 18, 2026, but was later found needing help and admitted to Saving Our Avian Resources (SOAR). Where is DH4?
DH4 successfully fledged on June 18 and continued exploring the Decorah area afterward. She was last seen or heard on the morning of July 28. Anyone have a old pic of Mom? All my stuff didn’t transfer to my new computer.

Was I wrong in reading Sue’s post that she was seeing the orginal Mom?
Yes her and her DH check on them often, her DH has a good camera for zooming
thanks Ardy
Hi Ardyth, thanks for sharing. Thanks to Sue as well.
I’m over joyed to report Mom Decorah and DM2 are still together!! There was a Happy Dance this morning as we came around the corner of the Bike Trail and Low and Behold there was Mommy D & DM2 both perched side by side enjoying their Beautiful morning on the Snag Tree! As we got closer to see them, my eyes started leaking. I was thrilled to say the least! Mom Decorah is getting older. To figure out her age I’m using Information from In 2007 N0 (First Nest over by the Bluffs) is destroyed during a storm. Dad and… Read more »
Thx Ardyth

Nice to see the moisture, it will be All gone soon with the sunshine.
The Mountains rec’d LOTS of snow 6 – 12 ” ⛄
Morning Bons. Bet the resorts are happy!
Hi Fran, they sure are happy, all the ski-ers are really happy too!
Good morning BB
Glad you are getting snow, its dry there and fires happening now.
Morning Ardyth, need A Lot more moisture/snow, a couple of fires were happening yesterday, haven’t heard yet if they are still trying to put them out, it was SO Very Windy yesterday.
I saw the huge car pile up due to the winds
Really? In the mountains? I worry about DS driving from Denver to Parker. And down to the valley and wherever he drives to the caves, OK I’m like Linda and worry.
Hi Fran, the pile up was S of CO Springs on I-25.
I would worry too!!
Going to be a warm sunny day but very windy. We are so dry here. They have a no burn order.
Should get up to 68* here today. I will open a window later.
I am still putting things out downstairs. Haven’t even touched upstairs.
Between my bum foot (I don’t know if I broke it or just twisted it. The other night it just went out from under me.) and the Olympics, I am not getting much done.
Maybe you should get that checked out
I know. DH doesn’t want me to wear my “slippers” A pair of Clarks Sandals with a heal. So I wear my tennis shoes, and feel so short.
😄… 😘 to DH!
The adult eagles on the Decorah nest are known as HD (Hatchery Dad) and HM2 (Hatchery Mom II). Named for the nearby Decorah trout hatchery, HD is an experienced male who has raised multiple eaglets over the years, while HM2 is a newer nesting female.
Thanks Fran
I got it from just above the feed. Ardy posted it the other day.
I still think this is a new male. The other one didn’t like all the noise, and moved out further. He never seemed loving to OG Mom.
Maybe Mom taught him well. This is all in my opinion.
Did RRP ever find Mom?
They found her dead sadly
what is OG mom
Our Original Mom. The first one we started watching when the cams started.
Sad, but I am glad they found her. I think back to us meaning RRP trying to find Dad and never did.
I am confused…..this male wasnt with the original mom Decorah was he??
I don’t think so. That one always seemed so “a luff” to me toward Mom.
This pair seem much more like our original pair. (to me)
No that was DM2 who didnt like the noise
That i knew but Fran is confused and had me confused😂
The original mom is still alive, moved the nest with no cam
Decorah Mom is still alive
Im sure this was the inexperienced Dad we watched one season
Morning Fran, thanks for the info….
Good morning. What a wonderful sight to see!
Is this the M or F?
I haven’t figured out how to tell them apart yet.
There hasn’t been many face close ups.
This one (mom?) has dark spots on the right side…not sure if its dirt or not
I thought this was the male, looking at the beak to eye length, But I haven’t seen the other close up. The spots will help.
But we have an adult sitting on an egg with a great view. And I am happy!
Do you know what RRP is calling this nest?
N6
Above live feed
I am so happy we have an egg. I sure missed seeing eagles nesting here.
Morning. YAY!
Oh gosh me too!
