Decorah Eagle Dad HD Stops By With a Fish as DH3 Continues Recovery

Life around the Decorah Eagles nest area has grown much quieter. DH3 remains in rehabilitation, while its siblings have moved on from the nest area and have not appeared on camera for some time. Still, the familiar territory isn’t completely empty. Both HD and HM2 have made recent appearances. Then, on August 16, Decorah Eagle Dad HD turned up with something viewers haven’t seen nearly as often lately: a fish and a front-row seat to his lunch.

Decorah Eagle Dad HD Appears Near The Pond

The video opens with a peaceful wide view of the pond beneath an overcast sky. Trees fill the distance, and at first, there isn’t much movement. Then the camera finds an eagle.

Far across the landscape, HD perches on the branch of a dead tree. As the camera zooms closer, viewers spot another important detail. Dad has a fish. HD holds the fish firmly beneath his talons and begins tearing off pieces. He eats slowly and methodically, occasionally stopping to lift his head and scan the area around him.

For several minutes, the scene is simple and familiar: Dad HD, a fresh fish, and the Decorah landscape stretching out behind him. But then the meal ends.

HD Suddenly Takes Off Toward The Bluffs

After finishing the fish, HD pauses and looks around. Next, he stretches his wings and launches from the branch. The camera follows as he flies away from the pond and heads toward the forested bluffs in the distance.

For a moment, it appears that Dad’s visit may be over. However, the camera keeps searching. Soon, the camera finds HD again.

This time, HD rests high on a rocky outcrop along the bluff, overlooking the lush green landscape. The peaceful sighting offered viewers another look at one of the Decorah adults at a time when the nest area itself has become noticeably quieter.

And while HD was spending his afternoon in the bluffs, another member of the Decorah family was continuing an important journey of its own.

Decorah Eagle DH3 Continues Making Progress

DH3 continues to recover in rehabilitation. In its August 5 update, SOAR reported moving DH3 into a larger enclosure, giving the young eagle more room to exercise and continue building muscle strength.

That move marks another important step forward for DH3 after rescuers found the young eagle in July and brought it to safety. Although DH3 still has work ahead, the larger space allows it to strengthen the muscles needed for flight and continue progressing through rehabilitation.

For viewers who have followed DH3 since the nest, every step matters.

The Decorah Nest Area Has Grown Quiet

Meanwhile, DH3’s siblings have moved away from the familiar nest area, and the cameras haven’t captured them for some time. That isn’t unusual as young eagles become more independent and begin exploring farther from the nest.

As a result, viewers may go longer stretches without seeing the younger eagles on camera. The adults, however, are still making occasional appearances. Recent camera sightings of Decorah Eagle dad HD and mom HM2 remind viewers that the pair still uses the wider territory even when the nest itself looks empty.

Two Very Different Views Of The Decorah Eagles

Right now, the Decorah story is unfolding in two places. In rehabilitation, DH3 is gaining strength in a larger enclosure and working toward the next stage of recovery. Back in Decorah, HD and HM2 continue appearing around the territory while the younger eagles venture farther from the nest.

Dad HD’s August 16 visit captured that changing season perfectly. He arrived with a fish, ate quietly above the pond, and then flew toward the bluffs before settling high above the landscape.

Meanwhile, DH3 continues working toward something much bigger. More strength. More flight practice. And, hopefully, another step closer to returning to the wild. For now, the next update will depend on DH3’s continued progress in rehabilitation. Back in Decorah, viewers will also be watching the cameras for the next surprise appearance from HD, HM2, or one of the young eagles.
