Shadow and KD1 Stay Close in Big Bear, Then Roost Together Overnight

Shadow and KD1 spent Sunday in Big Bear moving through familiar territory, sometimes apart and sometimes remarkably close.

Their August 16 day began with vocals from the Twin Pines. Later, KD1 returned beneath the Big Bear eagle nest for the second day in a row. Then, as evening settled over the valley, the two eagles appeared together again.

This time, the day did not end with one of them flying off alone. Shadow and KD1 both settled into the Roost Tree for the night. For people still grieving Jackie, nothing about seeing another eagle beside Shadow is simple. Jackie cannot be replaced, and there is no reason to rush what happens next.

Still, after such a painful week, seeing Shadow remain in Big Bear with another eagle nearby offered something many people desperately needed: a little reassurance.

Shadow and KD1 in Big Bear Begin the Morning Together

The morning started with something familiar drifting through the Big Bear pines: eagle vocals. Camera views soon revealed Shadow perched in the Twin Pines. KD1 was there too, tucked behind branches below him and much harder to spot.

Shadow did not stay for long. After he flew away, KD1 headed to Sunny’s Hideout, where the young banded eagle remained for roughly two and a half hours. Then KD1 made another interesting move and headed back toward the nest tree. It was not KD1’s first visit there.

KD1 Returns to the Basement for a Second Day

Instead of flying directly into the nest, KD1 landed in the area below it that viewers commonly call the “basement.” It marked the second day in a row that KD1 had used the lower portion of Shadow’s nest tree as a perch.

From one camera angle, only her tail could be seen beneath the nest. Another camera offered a better look as KD1 quietly preened, watched her surroundings and remained there for about 40 minutes before leaving.

KD1 has not simply made one quick visit through Big Bear. The young banded eagle continues returning to trees and perches within the same habitat Shadow has used for years.

Friends of Big Bear Valley had already documented the two spending several hours together in the Twin Pines on August 14. The organization also reported that the banded subadult was first seen on its cameras in the habitat on August 6 and began perching near Shadow as the days passed.

Whatever KD1’s intentions may be, her visits are becoming difficult to dismiss as a single fly-through.

What About the Sticks Below the Big Bear Eagle Nest?

The basement view also revealed a large collection of sticks beneath the Big Bear eagle nest. While the sight can look dramatic from the camera angle, sticks falling from the nest over time are a normal part of life at a large bald eagle nest.

As eagles add new material, rearrange sticks and use the nest year after year, some sticks naturally shift or fall over the sides. At Big Bear, many of those fallen sticks become caught in the branches below the nest, helping create the area viewers now know as the “basement.”

The presence of those sticks does not indicate that the nest is collapsing or that there is a problem with the nest itself. Bald eagle nests are constantly changing structures. Eagles return to established nests, add new sticks and continue reshaping them from season to season.

So while KD1’s perch offered viewers an unusually good look at just how much material has accumulated beneath the nest, the fallen sticks themselves are nothing unusual.

Then Shadow and KD1 Found Each Other Again

KD1 eventually left the nest tree, but the day’s story was not finished. By evening, Shadow and KD1 in Big Bear were together again in the Twin Pines.

It was another quiet encounter rather than a dramatic one. There was no nest battle. There was no chase. There was simply Shadow, KD1 and the familiar trees above Big Bear Lake.

Then came the moment that gave the day a very different ending. Both eagles moved to the Roost Tree and spent the night there. After everything that has happened, there was something powerful about that simple sight. Shadow was still home. And another eagle was nearby.

Are Shadow and KD1 Becoming a Pair?

That is the question hovering over nearly every new encounter. The answer remains the same: it is too early to know. Sharing perches, repeatedly returning to the same habitat and even using the same roost tree can certainly make their interactions more interesting. But none of those behaviors alone proves that Shadow and KD1 have formed a pair bond.

Bald eagles can form another pair bond after losing a mate. Although bald eagle pairs can remain together for many years, a surviving eagle may eventually pair again when something happens to its mate. Territory can also play an important role in those relationships.

That does not mean every eagle spending time near Shadow is destined to become his mate. Time will tell far more than any single perch, nest visit or night in the same tree.

Jackie Does Not Disappear From This Story

Perhaps the hardest part of watching Shadow and KD1 is realizing that two emotions can exist at the same time. People can deeply miss Jackie and still feel relieved when they see Shadow with company.

Those feelings do not cancel each other out. Jackie’s place in Big Bear was built through years beside Shadow, through eggs and eaglets, snowstorms, nest battles, quiet mornings and countless moments watched around the world.

Another eagle cannot erase any of that. Seeing KD1 beside Shadow does not require anyone to move past Jackie before they are ready. It simply means that while people are still looking backward at everything Jackie left behind, nature continues moving forward one day at a time.

The Small Details Are Becoming Harder to Ignore

Just a few days ago, KD1 followed Shadow into the nest, moved sticks and even briefly preened his feathers. Now KD1 has returned to the basement of his nest tree on consecutive days.

KD1 continues using familiar trees around his territory. Shadow continues allowing her nearby. And Sunday ended with both eagles spending the night in the same Roost Tree. None of those moments provides the answer everyone wants. Together, however, they give eagle watchers plenty to watch.

The next important clue may not arrive through some spectacular courtship flight. It could come quietly, through repeated perching, more nest visits, shared time around the territory or simply KD1 continuing to appear day after day.

For Now, Shadow Is Still Here

There is no need to decide today what KD1 will become to Shadow. There is no need to give this relationship a name before the eagles do. For now, something much simpler may be enough. Shadow is still moving through the trees of Big Bear. KD1 keeps returning.

And on Sunday night, two bald eagles settled into the same roost tree above a valley that feels profoundly different without Jackie.

It was not a replacement.

It was not a promise about the next nesting season.

It was simply company in the pines.

And right now, that feels significant.
