- Egg #1: HM2 laid the first egg on February 17, 2026, at about 6:33 p.m. CT.
- Egg #2: HM2 laid the second egg on February 21 at about 5:03 p.m. CT.
- DH3 hatched: March 27 at about 7:01 a.m. CT.
- DH4 hatched: March 29, giving HD and HM2 two eaglets at Nest N6.
- Both eaglets fledged: June 18. DH4 left the nest at about 5:45 a.m., while DH3 also fledged later that day.
- DH3: was later admitted to SOAR with a soft-tissue wing injury. The latest official update reported no wing or leg fractures, very low blood lead levels, weight gain, and continued rehabilitation in a flight pen.
- DH4: was last seen or heard on the morning of July 28. RRP noted that her increasingly long absences were consistent with the wider ranging young eagles often show before dispersal, although her exact location was unknown.
About the Decorah Eagles
The current adult pair at the Decorah Fish Hatchery is HD (Hatchery Dad) and HM2 (Hatchery Mom II). HD has occupied and defended the hatchery territory for years. HM2 became his mate after the loss of Hatchery Mom (HM), beginning another chapter in the long history of bald eagles nesting around the Decorah trout hatchery.
HD and HM2 spent much of 2025 strengthening their pair bond and working on potential nest sites. By late 2025, the pair had clearly adopted Nest N6, setting the stage for their successful 2026 nesting season.
Decorah Nest N6
N6 is the sixth nest associated with the chain of Decorah Hatchery Eagles. It sits near the Decorah Fish Hatchery and became the primary nest for HD and HM2 after the pair explored and worked on multiple nesting locations.
The Raptor Resource Project (RRP) installed cameras near both N5 and N6 while the eagles were deciding where to settle. By early December 2025, HD and HM2 had adopted N6, and the new Decorah Eagle Cam was brought online ahead of egg laying in February 2026.
What to Watch for on the Decorah Eagle Cam
The Decorah Eagle Cam can be active even outside the egg and eaglet stages of the nesting season. HD and HM2 may return to N6 to perch, inspect the nest, defend their territory, or begin moving sticks and nesting material as another breeding season approaches.
Activity often comes in bursts. Long quiet stretches can be followed by an eagle arrival, vocal exchange, food delivery, territorial encounter, or sudden round of nest work. Early morning and late afternoon can be especially interesting times to check the cam, although eagle activity can occur throughout the day.
Decorah Eagle Nesting Season Timeline
- Fall: pair bonding, territory defense, and increasing nest work may begin.
- Winter: nest preparation and courtship become more intense as breeding season approaches.
- February: HD and HM2 laid their two 2026 eggs on February 17 and February 21.
- Late March: DH3 and DH4 hatched on March 27 and March 29.
- Spring: eaglets grow rapidly while the adults deliver food and protect the nest.
- Early summer: young eagles begin branching, exercising their wings, and preparing for first flight.
- Post-fledge: juveniles remain around the territory while improving their flight and feeding skills before eventually dispersing.
Decorah Eagle Cam FAQ

The Decorah Eagle Cam follows bald eagles nesting near the Decorah Fish Hatchery in Decorah, Iowa. The current nest is known as N6.
Who are the current Decorah eagles?
The current breeding pair is HD (Hatchery Dad) and HM2 (Hatchery Mom II). They successfully raised DH3 and DH4 at Nest N6 during the 2026 season.
What happened to DH3?
DH3 fledged on June 18, 2026, but was later found needing help and admitted to Saving Our Avian Resources (SOAR). Examinations found no wing or leg fractures, but a drooping wing indicated a soft-tissue injury. The most recent official update reported that DH3 was gaining weight and progressing through rehabilitation.
Where is DH4?
DH4 successfully fledged on June 18 and continued exploring the Decorah area afterward. She was last seen or heard on the morning of July 28. Her exact location is unknown, but RRP reported that her behavior was consistent with young female eagles beginning to range farther from the nest before dispersal.
When do Decorah eagles lay eggs?
Egg dates vary from year to year. During the 2026 season, HM2 laid eggs on February 17 and February 21. Nest behavior, weather, pair bonding, and other natural factors can affect the timing of future clutches.
What do the Decorah eagles eat?
The Decorah eagles are opportunistic carnivores. Fish are an important part of their diet, especially with the trout hatchery nearby, but bald eagles may also eat small mammals, birds, carrion, and other available prey.
Are the Decorah eagles wild?
Yes. HD, HM2, and the other eagles seen around the Decorah nest are wild bald eagles living and nesting in their natural environment.

Good Morning. I slept in. I heard it rain overnight and checked my gauge and got 1.5 inches. Going to rain off and on all day and all week.
Morning Becki. How did work go?
It was fine.
Morning Becki, Nice, hope to see some rain today!
Good morning, Geez been so busy canning on my end. Running to the market for my beets, put two cases of pickle beets with hard boiled eggs in it. That time of the year for canning. DWA at 10AM. I best get my swim stuff together after breakfast. So much funerals going on back in Alaska. When they saw they go in 3’s I believe that is true. Later
Morning. I’m sorry to hear of your losses.
Sorry for your losses but it does seem to come in threes
Sorry for your losses!
Good morning. Hair appt today. Yay!br
I watched the Emmys because of Marishka! She was great! I think she changed clothes more than Cher at a concert! She looked stunning! The show was really good. I don’t watch any of the shows nominated. The In Memorium was beautifully done and brought me to tears. So did Michael J. Fox, who won the Bob Hope award.
Morning Franny, I did turn the tv on last night but end watching the foot ball game.
I caught the end of the game. Another bad one for me. Broncos are my 2nd team
I think a lot of our teams lost. Did the Eagles win?
Yes. (I had to look it up)
Thanks
I’m here for you!
😘
All three of mine won😍
😜
She did great at hosting. I don’t watch any of the shows nominated either.
Good Morning Fran , think I missed you, happy hair appt. have a good day.
Still here for a bit.
I enjoyed it also..especially MJ Fox and the Dolly tribute.
Just saw a hummer taking a long drink from feeder, havent seen many lately. Stuff to do, SYL
Morning. Mine have been busy.
Morning Joyce
Morning Joyce. My HB activity has slowed down. I did see quite a few this morning. They seem to like the rain.
I’ve seen one twice now. I think they are migrating. Unfortunately they waited until the fuschia is on its last legs.
Good morning friends. Chilly morning here 49 degrees when I got up, 55 now. Didn’t watch the Emmys last night. Almost all of the nominees are from shows that stream rather than on regular broadcast stations (ABC< NBC<CBS) so nothing interests me. We still watch mostly regular stations. Headed up to Dunkin later, need to do some cleaning later. Have a great day all!!
I watched mostly for the tribute to Dolly (Reba did a wonderful job singing) and to see Michael J. Fox win the humanitarian award and to hear his speech..made me emotional.
Hi Lynn, I did see a clip of Michael J Fox, he is inspiring as to how he has kept going.
Morning. She did do a wonderful job. Reba hasn’t aged .
Hi Ellie
I watched the first half of the football game
Hi Ellie, i pretty much watch regular starions too, hope you get your cleaning done
I watch a lot of regular stations but i do watch FX…Love their series, the weirder the better.
i like METV< Animal Planet & History channels too, dont watch talk or soaps tho
Haha I watch a lot of soaps
I lean toward medical, or police stuff. I have not watched The Pitt. I may start.
I’m not too crazy about police stuff but I like the Chicago Med And the other one I can’t think of the name but I don’t like the The police one
Chicago Fire? I don’t watch any of those. Used to watch 911.
i love these shows
Me too!!
😘
I turn in on ~ GH, the only one I see anymore!
I watch all four of them…lol
Good morning El, that’s chilly.
Hi Gail, yup, but great for sleeping with more than a sheet!
Morning Ellie. I watch the same. I’m not seeing many new shows I’m gonna watch. Some taking the “Blue Bloods” playbook. (I’m still mad it’s off the air).
I’m still mad at off the Air too ’cause I didn’t like the new one so I stopped watching it
I’m not a fan of Boston Blue either, but not much else is on, so I watch. I just have trouble that it is not BB! I miss the entire cast and the dynamics they have.
I have not watched the new show. I really like the original
That was my problem it just wasn’t the same I was expecting it to be more of the same I always do and then it’s a let down
Hi Fran, me too. I was watching Fire Country but Bodie and a few of the other characters keep making the same stupid mistakes. I will try it again, but don’t know if I’ll stick with it. There are supposedly a lot of changes to Tracker I am not sure I like, but will try that as well.
Good morning, you betcha i had the FP on, 40s this morning. Appt. later with rheumaologist. Hope there is something she can do.
Hi Joyce, brrrrrrr is right. 49 here when I got up. Great for sleeping last night I don’t mind heat during the day because now the nights cool down. Not much happening here. I did go to the oncologist yesterday and she discharged me (it’s been 6 years since lymphoma/implant removal), which is good but maybe a little scary. I hope the rheumatologist can help you 😘I hope all is well with Mo!
Glad you are doing well Eleanor. Good morning.
Hi Carole Ann, thank you. It’s a bit scary but I’m not looking for trouble. I hope things are going well with you.
Morning.
Ellie that sure is good news!
Good luck with your appt. Hope you can get some relief.
Great News Ellie.
That is wonderful news Ellie you ought to go out and celebrate today💃
Good morning Joyce. Chilly here this morning, but it is going to warm up.
Good morning Carole, right, it will warm up and be nice
Hope your appointment goes well and you get some help.
Thanks Carole, hope so, my left hand is useless
Good luck 🥰
😪
Goodness the temps have cooled down for you!
Colder than i thought, morning. Did you get rain, heard something about flooding in Tucson?
Yes we had a big monsoon thunder/lightning storm.
Good luck with your appointment. Hope she can help you.
@jerseygypsy I emailed you a thank you for the card a few days ago. Not sure if you got the email so I thought I better also thank you here.
