- Egg #1: HM2 laid the first egg on February 17, 2026, at about 6:33 p.m. CT.
- Egg #2: HM2 laid the second egg on February 21 at about 5:03 p.m. CT.
- DH3 hatched: March 27 at about 7:01 a.m. CT.
- DH4 hatched: March 29, giving HD and HM2 two eaglets at Nest N6.
- Both eaglets fledged: June 18. DH4 left the nest at about 5:45 a.m., while DH3 also fledged later that day.
- DH3: was later admitted to SOAR with a soft-tissue wing injury. The latest official update reported no wing or leg fractures, very low blood lead levels, weight gain, and continued rehabilitation in a flight pen.
- DH4: was last seen or heard on the morning of July 28. RRP noted that her increasingly long absences were consistent with the wider ranging young eagles often show before dispersal, although her exact location was unknown.
About the Decorah Eagles
The current adult pair at the Decorah Fish Hatchery is HD (Hatchery Dad) and HM2 (Hatchery Mom II). HD has occupied and defended the hatchery territory for years. HM2 became his mate after the loss of Hatchery Mom (HM), beginning another chapter in the long history of bald eagles nesting around the Decorah trout hatchery.
HD and HM2 spent much of 2025 strengthening their pair bond and working on potential nest sites. By late 2025, the pair had clearly adopted Nest N6, setting the stage for their successful 2026 nesting season.
Decorah Nest N6
N6 is the sixth nest associated with the chain of Decorah Hatchery Eagles. It sits near the Decorah Fish Hatchery and became the primary nest for HD and HM2 after the pair explored and worked on multiple nesting locations.
The Raptor Resource Project (RRP) installed cameras near both N5 and N6 while the eagles were deciding where to settle. By early December 2025, HD and HM2 had adopted N6, and the new Decorah Eagle Cam was brought online ahead of egg laying in February 2026.
What to Watch for on the Decorah Eagle Cam
The Decorah Eagle Cam can be active even outside the egg and eaglet stages of the nesting season. HD and HM2 may return to N6 to perch, inspect the nest, defend their territory, or begin moving sticks and nesting material as another breeding season approaches.
Activity often comes in bursts. Long quiet stretches can be followed by an eagle arrival, vocal exchange, food delivery, territorial encounter, or sudden round of nest work. Early morning and late afternoon can be especially interesting times to check the cam, although eagle activity can occur throughout the day.
Decorah Eagle Nesting Season Timeline
- Fall: pair bonding, territory defense, and increasing nest work may begin.
- Winter: nest preparation and courtship become more intense as breeding season approaches.
- February: HD and HM2 laid their two 2026 eggs on February 17 and February 21.
- Late March: DH3 and DH4 hatched on March 27 and March 29.
- Spring: eaglets grow rapidly while the adults deliver food and protect the nest.
- Early summer: young eagles begin branching, exercising their wings, and preparing for first flight.
- Post-fledge: juveniles remain around the territory while improving their flight and feeding skills before eventually dispersing.

The Decorah Eagle Cam follows bald eagles nesting near the Decorah Fish Hatchery in Decorah, Iowa. The current nest is known as N6.
Who are the current Decorah eagles?
The current breeding pair is HD (Hatchery Dad) and HM2 (Hatchery Mom II). They successfully raised DH3 and DH4 at Nest N6 during the 2026 season.
What happened to DH3?
DH3 fledged on June 18, 2026, but was later found needing help and admitted to Saving Our Avian Resources (SOAR). Examinations found no wing or leg fractures, but a drooping wing indicated a soft-tissue injury. The most recent official update reported that DH3 was gaining weight and progressing through rehabilitation.
Where is DH4?
DH4 successfully fledged on June 18 and continued exploring the Decorah area afterward. She was last seen or heard on the morning of July 28. When do Decorah eagles lay eggs?
Egg dates vary from year to year. During the 2026 season, HM2 laid eggs on February 17 and February 21. Nest behavior, weather, pair bonding, and other natural factors can affect the timing of future clutches.
What do the Decorah eagles eat?
The Decorah eagles are opportunistic carnivores. Fish are an important part of their diet, especially with the trout hatchery nearby, but bald eagles may also eat small mammals, birds, carrion, and other available prey.

Judy, I was talking with Diane the other day and we were talking about Decorah reunions and she sent me this picture.
I dont see a picture.
Me either. Hi Ardyth.
Hi Tracy, how are things? Lots of wind and rain here and we are inland in PA not the shore.
I emailed you. I’m probably in your junk mail. I’ve been watching the news and seeing the flooding and the wind. Hope nothing bad happens in your area.
Hi Tracy. Have you seen this?
The photo didn’t post. It would be fun to see it.
Now I got it 😀
I want to meet this lady. I wonder who she is??? 😂
😂
Looking good Becki.
Sweet looking person.
//
I have that one
Do you have the year marked? I don’t
let me look
here is 2014
2016
Thanks Ardy
me too
That takes me back a number of years. What year was that?
I will have to ask Diane.
I do have it in my computer but would have to go back to find it. Lynda was there as were many others that have since passed away.
😪
I hope she is doing well. Where is she living now?
She is in AZ with her daughter. She is doing good.
That is good news. Say hi to her for me.
I will.
2016
I would love to see some of the pictures labeled with names.
DH Got get the lawn done. The sun comes out for a few minutes and then clouds up again. My HB feeder out back has been very busy today. The camera has recorded 52 visits. I have seen a few out front. Will have to make more nectar for the front feeder tomorrow.
Our feeder isn’t that busy but today has been quite active. I don’t see a lot at one time. Today I saw 3 at one time. I assume they are starting to head south. I don’t know how much longer they will still come through here. We have monarchs also coming through.
I am thinking it won’t be much longer before they are gone. I have reaally enjoyed having the camera this year. I can watch them on my phone from anywhere.
I like your hummingbird camera also. 😁
I just thought about this. I could have sent you a link and you could have watched it on your phone too.
Omg really? How about next year? That would be so cool.
I will. Just remind me.
Heck I have a hard time remembering things.
I have a bird buddy webcam on our regular feeder but we don’t seem to get pictures of the spring ones that come like orioles and grosbeaks. I don’t have a hummingbird cam. I’m glad you are enjoying it.
My friend who lives in TN has 4 or 5 cameras. She has gotten some orioles. They are such a pretty bird.
Next spring I will have to look closer and see if any come to it. I have seen them come but maybe the camera didn’t get triggered.
The grass was probably needing a cutting after all the rain you got.
It was so long. Usually Jerry uses the mulching setting on the mower but he couldn’t today because it would keep locking up because of the long grass and was still a little damp
That’s too bad. I remember how much he likes to mow. I’m still using the battery push mower at moms. It has a mulching blade also. It shuts off when too much grass gets clumped up under it also.
Just finished making deviled eggs. I cheated and bought the hard boiled eggs from the store. No trying to get the shells off the eggs.😀
I’ve bought those a few times and the price is reasonable and less work to do.
I have the worst luck trying to peel them and now with my hands it is just too hard.
Ugh, sorry your hands are hurting, that makes things difficult when you want to do a smaller task using the hands.
Sure rained this morning, afternoon has been mostly dry. Lost power but it wasn’t out long, but think worse still to come tonight & tomorrow. I did go out and car started right up. Been snacking all day
Nice you are getting a break between rains. Good the car started right up.
Hope the power isn’t a problem for you and the storm isn’t bad.
Got my shopping done. Been to Walmart and Fareway. The sun came out for 2 hours and now it is clouding up again. DH decided he should mow and this will probably be the best day to do it. Rain coming again. He is almost done. Hope he finishes before it starts raining.
Glad you got your things taken care of.
We haven’t seen the sun in a few days. It’s been either rainy or cloudy. We came home to 5 inches of water in our rain gauge for the 2 weeks we were gone.
We have had so much rain this month. One of our rivers here, the Rock River, is near flood stage. It should be ok because the rain they are predicting aren’t huge amounts.
We had very little rain during the summer but it appears to be all coming now which isn’t good for the farmers.
Same here. The fields are so wet.
Yes it depends on the soil type how well they drain.
Rick said he would go to the Lion King but it seems the cheaper tickets have sold out in the last two hours before he got up…
That is too bad, hope you can find some since you want to go.
We arent going to go….I dont feel like sounding the money on something so many months from now, you never know what could happen between now and March. I did see it once.
You could probably sell the tickets if you found that you couldn’t go.
oh that would be more of a hassle than it’s worth. It’s not a big deal like I said I’ve seen it once so it’s OK
Oh gosh, ditto Judy!
That’s a bummer😕
Oh well they were still more than i felt like spending…..its not until March, anything can happen between now and then.
I want to go to CA. sometime this spring anyways
OH, BTW cams should be back in a few weeks. Yay!
Good news!
Great, hi Fran
