- Egg #1: HM2 laid the first egg on February 17, 2026, at about 6:33 p.m. CT.
- Egg #2: HM2 laid the second egg on February 21 at about 5:03 p.m. CT.
- DH3 hatched: March 27 at about 7:01 a.m. CT.
- DH4 hatched: March 29, giving HD and HM2 two eaglets at Nest N6.
- Both eaglets fledged: June 18. DH4 left the nest at about 5:45 a.m., while DH3 also fledged later that day.
- DH3: was later admitted to SOAR with a soft-tissue wing injury. The latest official update reported no wing or leg fractures, very low blood lead levels, weight gain, and continued rehabilitation in a flight pen.
- DH4: was last seen or heard on the morning of July 28. RRP noted that her increasingly long absences were consistent with the wider ranging young eagles often show before dispersal, although her exact location was unknown.
About the Decorah Eagles
The current adult pair at the Decorah Fish Hatchery is HD (Hatchery Dad) and HM2 (Hatchery Mom II). HD has occupied and defended the hatchery territory for years. HM2 became his mate after the loss of Hatchery Mom (HM), beginning another chapter in the long history of bald eagles nesting around the Decorah trout hatchery.
HD and HM2 spent much of 2025 strengthening their pair bond and working on potential nest sites. By late 2025, the pair had clearly adopted Nest N6, setting the stage for their successful 2026 nesting season.
Decorah Nest N6
N6 is the sixth nest associated with the chain of Decorah Hatchery Eagles. It sits near the Decorah Fish Hatchery and became the primary nest for HD and HM2 after the pair explored and worked on multiple nesting locations.
The Raptor Resource Project (RRP) installed cameras near both N5 and N6 while the eagles were deciding where to settle. By early December 2025, HD and HM2 had adopted N6, and the new Decorah Eagle Cam was brought online ahead of egg laying in February 2026.
What to Watch for on the Decorah Eagle Cam
The Decorah Eagle Cam can be active even outside the egg and eaglet stages of the nesting season. HD and HM2 may return to N6 to perch, inspect the nest, defend their territory, or begin moving sticks and nesting material as another breeding season approaches.
Activity often comes in bursts. Long quiet stretches can be followed by an eagle arrival, vocal exchange, food delivery, territorial encounter, or sudden round of nest work. Early morning and late afternoon can be especially interesting times to check the cam, although eagle activity can occur throughout the day.
Decorah Eagle Nesting Season Timeline
- Fall: pair bonding, territory defense, and increasing nest work may begin.
- Winter: nest preparation and courtship become more intense as breeding season approaches.
- February: HD and HM2 laid their two 2026 eggs on February 17 and February 21.
- Late March: DH3 and DH4 hatched on March 27 and March 29.
- Spring: eaglets grow rapidly while the adults deliver food and protect the nest.
- Early summer: young eagles begin branching, exercising their wings, and preparing for first flight.
- Post-fledge: juveniles remain around the territory while improving their flight and feeding skills before eventually dispersing.

Who are the current Decorah eagles?
The current breeding pair is HD (Hatchery Dad) and HM2 (Hatchery Mom II). They successfully raised DH3 and DH4 at Nest N6 during the 2026 season.
What happened to DH3?
DH3 fledged on June 18, 2026, but was later found needing help and admitted to Saving Our Avian Resources (SOAR). Examinations found no wing or leg fractures, but a drooping wing indicated a soft-tissue injury. Where is DH4?
DH4 successfully fledged on June 18 and continued exploring the Decorah area afterward. She was last seen or heard on the morning of July 28. When do Decorah eagles lay eggs?
Egg dates vary from year to year. During the 2026 season, HM2 laid eggs on February 17 and February 21. Nest behavior, weather, pair bonding, and other natural factors can affect the timing of future clutches.
What do the Decorah eagles eat?
The Decorah eagles are opportunistic carnivores. Fish are an important part of their diet, especially with the trout hatchery nearby, but bald eagles may also eat small mammals, birds, carrion, and other available prey.

Hi Ardyth! I love how you always find these amazing murals. Thanks for sharing 😊
Arent they cute!
Hello everyone. I had plans for Saturday and today. Saturday I was going to mow here but DH never got me any gas for the rider so I did nothing. Today mom and I were going to ride our trikes but it’s nuisance raining and cold. Wasn’t supposed to be. So today I did nothing also. Been in a bored coma.
The least DH could do is get the gas since you do the mowing. Sorry about the rain.
Yeah but he only had a week to get me gas. 😡
So, what DOES Tim do?
Pays for everything
Well, that is something I guess.
😄
That wouldnt be enough for me…..I take care of cleaning…Rick takes care of the yard and gardens and cooks ♥
Hi Tracy, sorry your weekend is a bust. Raining hard all day, got the EBGBs and.an unhappy dog
Awwww sorry.
Sorry Jersey.
I knew about yesterday but sorry about today……guess you will have to mow this week if you dont have plans…..dang
yeah but it’s going to get cold 😩
Oh yeah, I forgot you said that…..Make Tim mow…..lol
Sounds like a pretty good weekend. 😁.
I don’t mind doing nothing. Lol.
Me either! 😁
Hi T. So you did nothing. Hope you enjoyed being bored!😀
I don’t mind but all the work just waits for me.
Having coffee. It got up to 85 today. Tomorrow will probably be our last nice day.
so disappointed, last second Eagles lost the game, kinda just like last week😭Its that kinda day, still steady rain.
Hi Joyce, that was heartbreaking! I really thought they had the game. Oh well neither of my teams, PSU or the Eagles are doing very well this year. Both are hard to watch…It has been raining all day and it is windy. We had ordered ham dinners from a local firehouse so we did go out for those. Good meal – ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, pickled relish, rolls and pumpkin pie for $15. Happy to support the local fire companies.
I always like the firehouse dinners. My Packers won today. This is the first game where they really looked good.
The lions are looking good but it’s still early in the game.
👌
The Colts to to those nasty Steelers. We always do. We aren’t looking very good …again.
They always say “there’s always next year” 😩
Congrats Becki
😀
Firehouse dinners are always good
Yeah, tough loss, I thought they had.it too. Just been laying around, eating.all day, wind calmed down
Hi Ellie. That sounds good. We had fish from a church fish fry last week. It was good.
I saw the last quarter of the game and thought he Eagles were going to do it.
Same thing happened.last week!. Dunno
Need to get going.
Enjoy.
Raining heavy, Eagles winning at HT.seems so weird
That’s good, and yes it is weird. I’m amazed at how many fans go over to watch. They showed a few Eagle fans at our game last week.
Good morning.I just got up. Rose cried when we saw her. said “I thought you forgot about me” Hard for me not to cry. She looked OK. Just 3 years ago she was living on her own, walking the hall, doing her own laundry. Then her sister passed and she started to go down hill.(They were never really close, but a connection to her past.)That’s when we moved her to the place near us, now we had to move her to a LTC. I’ve been sad all week. I put her clothes away. I’ll need to rearrange things soon. Her… Read more »
It is very sad, and Rose is lucky you & DH stepped up to help now there is no one else.
Thanks Hon.
This is a place I can poor my heart out.
I feel for all of you. Do you know what the routine they have there? How much time does she spend in bed? Hopefully they get her up and in a wheelchair and out of the room.
Out of bed is their motto. She is now in a wheelchair. They have done some rehab. This will be her first full week, so she may have some activities.
I’m really sorry Fran. I know it is heartbreaking for all concerned. You are doing everything you possibly can to care for her. I know that is of little comfort. Hopefully Rose will adjust somewhat.
Thanks guys. You are all the best!
