The Decorah eagle nest got bigger this week — and for a brief moment, it also got a little dramatic. On the afternoon of February 21, 2026, eagle mom HM2 laid her second egg of the season. Just four days earlier, on February 17, she had laid her first egg. Now there are two eggs resting safely beneath her. And soon after laying the second egg, she wasn’t ready to give up her place.

A Careful and Important Job
After laying her second egg, HM2 gently lowered herself over both eggs. She tucked them close under her feathers to keep them warm.

Bald eagle eggs need steady heat to grow. Inside each shell, a tiny eaglet is slowly forming. This incubation usually lasts about 35 days before hatching. If everything goes well, we could see the first small cracks in the shells sometime in late March.
For now, the nest looks quiet. But something amazing is slowly happening inside those eggs.
Dad Tries to Help
Not long after the second egg arrived, dad flew into the nest. Eagle parents usually take turns incubating. One sits on the eggs while the other hunts or stretches. Then they switch. It is teamwork.
Dad stepped closer, likely ready to take his shift. But HM2 had other plans.
“Not Yet”
When dad tried to move in, mom gave him a few small nips at his beak. They were not angry bites. They were quick and clear. Her message was simple. Not yet. She shifted her body protectively over the eggs, covering them fully. She wasn’t ready to give up her spot just yet. Dad paused. He tried for a moment longer. Then he understood.
Instead of pushing the issue, he stepped back and stayed nearby. Close enough to guard the nest. Close enough to help if needed. It was a brief but unmistakable standoff. And then, just as quickly, calm returned.
Could There Be a Third Egg?
Right now, there are two eggs in the Decorah nest. Could a third egg appear? It is possible, but fairly unlikely. Many bald eagle nests have two eggs each season. Still, nature does not always follow a script. We will have to wait and see.
The Long Wait Begins
Now comes the quiet stretch. Over the next several weeks, HM2 and dad will continue taking turns incubating, even if mom wanted a little extra time at first. They will gently roll the eggs and protect them from wind and rain while watching the world from high above the ground.
And inside those shells, life will keep growing.
Spring is on its way. And so is hatch day.
