High above the nest tree, E26 suddenly lifted into the wind, hovering as Dad M15 watched from below. For a moment, the young eagle seemed to float above the branches before drifting back down toward the nest. But the most unexpected moment of the day was still to come.
Watch Live ← Nest Cam
For much of the day, E26 had been exploring the familiar perches around the nest tree. The eaglet moved between the veranda branch, the attic area, and the camera housing above the nest, stretching wings and testing balance in the breeze. Each short hop and wing stretch revealed just how much strength the young bird has gained in recent weeks.
But when E26 lifted off again and hovered above the upper branches, the young eagle’s growing confidence in the air was impossible to miss.

E26 Tests the Wind Above the Nest
The video opens with E26 rising from the nest and hovering above the veranda branch before settling carefully onto the tip. Wings spread wide, the young eagle balanced against the wind, practicing the precise control needed for flight.
A few minutes later, E26 attempts something even more impressive.
From the pond camera’s view, the eaglet climbs higher above the nest tree and briefly hovers above the upper branches. For a moment, E26 almost appears suspended in the air before drifting back down toward the nest.
These hovering moments are a critical step in the days leading up to fledging. Each lift, landing, and balancing act strengthens the wing muscles and improves coordination.
And judging by E26’s confidence in the air, that first real flight may be approaching.
A High Perch Above the Nest
After practicing in the air, E26 flew up to the camera housing above the nest tree.
It’s a perch that offers a clear view of the surrounding area, and E26 stayed there for more than an hour, quietly watching the activity below. From this elevated spot, the young eagle looked increasingly comfortable navigating the branches and open space around the nest.
Below, Dad M15 continued keeping watch over the territory.
Dad Brings Fish… and Gets a Surprise
Eventually, M15 returned to the nest with another fish and began eating part of the meal himself.
Not long after, E26 dropped down from the camera housing to investigate the fresh food. But before settling in to eat, the eaglet delivered a perfectly timed surprise for Dad.
While M15 focused on his fish, E26 left an unexpected “gift” from above, a moment that quickly had viewers laughing. M15 barely reacted, continuing his meal like the seasoned parent he is.
Soon after, E26 claimed one of the fish while M15 finished the other.
Life with a growing eaglet clearly comes with a few surprises.
A Young Eagle Almost Ready to Fly
Throughout the day, E26 showed impressive control in the air, confidently hovering above the nest tree and navigating the surrounding branches.
These short hovering flights and higher perches are often the final steps before fledging. Young eagles spend this time strengthening their wings, practicing takeoffs and landings, and growing more independent during feeding.
With each confident hover and careful landing, E26 looks more ready for that first true flight.
And when that moment finally arrives, the skies above the Southwest Florida nest tree may soon welcome a new young eagle learning to soar.
For now, viewers are enjoying every practice hover, every bold perch, and even the occasional surprise for Dad M15.
Because these small moments are all part of the journey toward flight.

FAQ
Why does E26 hover above the nest tree?
Hovering helps young eagles strengthen their wings and practice controlling the wind. These short lifts and hovering movements help prepare them for their first full flight.
What does it mean when an eaglet perches above the nest?
Perching above the nest allows young eagles to practice short flights between branches while building confidence and balance before fledging.
When will E26 fledge?
E26 appears to be very close to fledging. Strong hovering ability, confident landings, and increased independence are common signs that a young eagle is nearing its first flight.
Is it normal for eaglets to compete with parents for food?
Yes. As eaglets grow older, they begin feeding themselves and may take food deliveries directly, which helps prepare them for independence after fledging.
