The nearly new BBC Basel arrived in Duluth, Minnesota, on Monday evening, September 28, 2026, bringing one of BBC Chartering’s newest heavy-lift ships into the Twin Ports.
As daylight faded over the harbor, the deep-blue cargo ship moved through the water with its deck lights glowing. Golden reflections stretched across the surface behind the stern while two much older tugboats prepared to help guide the modern ship through the harbor. It was an unusual meeting of two eras of Great Lakes shipping.

BBC Basel Crosses Lake Superior to Duluth
Before reaching Duluth, BBC Basel had spent several days in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The ship departed Thunder Bay on Monday morning and crossed western Lake Superior before arriving in the Duluth-Superior harbor that evening. Tracking data shows the trip covered about 172 nautical miles. BBC Basel had reached Thunder Bay on September 23 after traveling through the St. Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes.

As the ship approached Duluth, radio traffic showed two local tugs getting into position. The Massachusetts was assigned to the bow, while the Kentucky prepared to work at the stern. That pairing created one of the most interesting parts of the arrival. The Great Lakes Towing Company built the Massachusetts in 1928 and the Kentucky in 1929. They were assisting a cargo ship delivered nearly a century later.
BBC Basel Is One of the New LakerMax Ships
BBC Basel was built in 2025 and is part of BBC Chartering’s new LakerMax family of multipurpose heavy-lift vessels. The ship is about 492 feet long and 76 feet wide. It has two large Liebherr cranes along its port side. Each crane can lift up to 250 metric tons, and they can work together for lifts of up to 500 metric tons. Those cranes allow BBC Basel to handle the kind of oversized cargo that cannot easily travel on a normal freighter.
The ship can carry large machinery, wind-energy components, industrial equipment and other project cargo. Its two cargo holds provide nearly 26,000 cubic meters of space, while the open weather deck offers about 2,830 square meters for large loads.
Built Specifically for the Great Lakes
The name LakerMax is more than marketing. BBC Chartering says the ships were designed so their dimensions would still fit through the locks and beneath the bridges of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway system. The company describes them as multipurpose triple-deck heavy-lift ships designed for worldwide service while remaining suited for Great Lakes operations.
The design also puts the ship’s bridge and crew quarters near the bow. That leaves a long, mostly unobstructed cargo area behind them. BBC Chartering says it designed the LakerMax vessels with Great Lakes trade in mind, including carrying wind-energy equipment up the Seaway and hauling grain or other cargo on return trips. The first vessel in the series, BBC Leer, entered service in 2024. BBC Houston became the first LakerMax ship to complete a Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway passage in May 2025.
A Striking Evening Arrival in Duluth
BBC Basel’s arrival offered a striking look at just how much Great Lakes shipping has changed. The new heavy-lifter slipped into the harbor carrying towering cranes, modern cargo spaces and a design created specifically for difficult project loads. Nearby were Massachusetts and Kentucky, working harbor tugs whose careers began when Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover were president.
By the time BBC Basel continued deeper into the Duluth-Superior harbor, its bright stern lights were reflecting across the darkening water. For a few minutes, nearly 100 years of working Great Lakes vessels shared the same stretch of harbor.
