Shadow Waits for Kaydee at Big Bear, Then Suddenly Gets Busy at the Nest

Share:

October 5, 2026, brought one of those wonderfully simple Big Bear moments that somehow says a lot without either eagle doing very much at all. Shadow appeared to be watching for Kaydee from the front porch of the nest. Then, the moment she left the Twin Pines and headed his way, he dropped straight into the nest and suddenly had sticks to rearrange.

Nothing to see here, Kaydee. Shadow was clearly very busy. At least, that is how the timing looked through the cameras. What followed was an adorable little stick shuffle, another trip to the Roost Tree and one more evening with Shadow and Kaydee settling close to one another. Their interactions have become increasingly familiar, and this day offered another glimpse of the comfortable routine developing between them.

Shadow Waits for Kaydee From the Big Bear Nest

Shadow arrived at the Big Bear nest and settled onto the front porch, where he had a wide view of the surrounding territory. Kaydee was perched over on the Twin Pines.

From his position, Shadow appeared to keep checking in her direction while he remained at the nest. The camera moved in for some beautiful close views of him as he perched against the Big Bear landscape.

For a while, nothing happened. Shadow waited. Kaydee stayed on Twin Pines. Then she finally took off. And that is when Shadow’s behavior became especially fun to watch. As soon as Kaydee left Twin Pines and started heading toward the nest, Shadow dropped from the front porch into the nest bowl.

Suddenly, he was busy. A stick here. A little adjustment there.

Whether Shadow was reacting specifically to Kaydee’s approach is impossible to know, but the timing made the scene hard not to smile at. Seconds earlier, he had been perched and watching. Now Kaydee was coming, and the Big Bear branch manager appeared to be back on duty.

Kaydee Arrives and the Stick Shuffle Begins

Kaydee came into the nest with a smooth landing, joining Shadow for another round of what has quickly become one of their familiar activities. Sticks. The two eagles began moving and adjusting some of the smaller pieces around the nest.

It was not a major construction project. No giant branches arrived, and the nest did not suddenly undergo an eagle-sized renovation.

Instead, it was another one of those small shared activities that has become increasingly common between Shadow and Kaydee.

One moves something. The other gets involved. A stick changes places. Then perhaps it changes places again. For longtime Big Bear viewers who know Shadow’s history as an enthusiastic stick mover, watching Kaydee participate in these little nest sessions adds another interesting layer to their developing relationship.

And Kaydee has certainly become comfortable inside the nest. She has gone from visiting it to carrying sticks, rearranging branches and spending increasingly more time there with Shadow.

Shadow and Kaydee Are Falling Into a Routine

After their nest visit, the two settled into separate spots around the nest. Shadow moved back toward the front porch while Kaydee spent time near the back porch. Then Shadow left for the Roost Tree. Kaydee followed.

By evening, both eagles could be seen together in the Roost Tree as they settled in for the night. That beginning-and-ending-the-day-together pattern is becoming one of the most interesting parts of watching Shadow and Kaydee.

There does not always need to be a dramatic interaction. Sometimes it is simply Shadow perched nearby. Kaydee arriving a little later. A few sticks moved around the nest. One eagle flying to another tree and the other eventually joining. Those repeated choices to remain in the same area are what have made their recent interactions so compelling to watch.

One Stick and One Perch at a Time

The relationship between Shadow and Kaydee has changed considerably since Kaydee first began spending time around Big Bear. Earlier interactions could feel unpredictable. Kaydee sometimes approached with plenty of enthusiasm, while Shadow did not always appear interested in having her quite so close.

Now there is a noticeably calmer rhythm to many of their visits. They spend time together at the nest and they work around the sticks. They use familiar trees around the habitat. And increasingly, they end their evenings near one another.

That does not mean every interaction tells us exactly where their relationship is headed. Bald eagles do not provide commentary on their intentions, and it is important not to turn every glance, landing or branch adjustment into something it cannot prove.

But their behavior can still be watched over time. And right now, Shadow and Kaydee continue choosing many of the same places at many of the same times.

Shadow’s Perfectly Timed Move Steals the Show

Of all the moments from October 5, however, Shadow’s perfectly timed drop into the nest may be the one eagle watchers remember most. There he was on the front porch, with Kaydee visible over on Twin Pines.

He appeared to watch in her direction. Kaydee took off. Down went Shadow. And suddenly there was nest work to be done. Was he trying to look busy before she arrived? Of course, we cannot know that. But the cameras certainly captured timing worthy of a smile.

And perhaps that is part of what makes watching Shadow and Kaydee right now so enjoyable. Their story is not moving forward through one enormous moment.

It is unfolding through dozens of little ones. A stick. A landing. A shared tree. An evening roost. And on this particular day, one very handsome eagle who seemed to have impeccable timing when Kaydee finally came his way.

Whatever comes next, Shadow and Kaydee are giving Big Bear eagle watchers plenty of reasons to keep watching. Because lately, even the smallest moments between these two can turn into something worth remembering.

FAQ: Shadow and Kaydee at the Big Bear Nest

Why was Shadow watching Kaydee from the Big Bear nest?

We cannot know exactly why Shadow was watching Kaydee, but he appeared to keep track of her while she perched on Twin Pines. Shadow waited for Kaydee from the front porch of the nest, and when she finally flies toward him, he quickly drops into the nest. His behavior suggests he was paying close attention to where she was and what she was doing, but the cameras cannot tell us his exact intent.

What did Shadow and Kaydee do together at the nest?

After Kaydee landed, the two eagles moved and adjusted several small sticks around the nest. Their back-and-forth stick work has become a familiar part of their recent visits together.

Are Shadow and Kaydee becoming a bonded pair?

Their continued nest visits, shared perches and time spent roosting near one another suggest their relationship is continuing to develop. However, individual interactions cannot confirm exactly where their pair bond stands.

Did Shadow and Kaydee roost together that night?

Yes. After leaving the nest area, Shadow flew to the Roost Tree and Kaydee followed. Both eagles could later be seen there as they settled in for the night.

Why do Shadow and Kaydee keep moving sticks at the nest?

Bald eagles move and arrange nesting material to maintain and prepare their nests. Shadow has long been an enthusiastic stick mover, and Kaydee has increasingly joined him in working around the Big Bear nest.

Does their nest activity mean Shadow and Kaydee will have eggs?

Not necessarily. Nest work and spending time together can be part of pair bonding and territory maintenance, but they do not guarantee mating or egg laying. Eagle watchers will need to continue observing their behavior as the season progresses.

Is Kaydee becoming more comfortable at the Big Bear nest?

Her repeated visits, stick moving, time spent with Shadow and use of nearby roosting and perching locations all indicate that Kaydee has become increasingly familiar with the Big Bear nest area.
