The eagles typically lay eggs in late January. Incubation, hatching, and early chick rearing run through late winter and early spring.
Over the years, Jackie and Shadow have become fan favorites as viewers watch them overcome storms, snow, heat, and the occasional raven or intruding eagle. Their nest sits more than a mile above sea level in the San Bernardino Mountains. Here, changing weather at Big Bear Lake can bring bright sunshine one day and heavy snow the next. There may be something else involved with Jackie’s health. Latest update – They said that Jackie was underweight, very sick and lethargic when rescued. It’s possible that this is why she wasn’t flying and the subadults could sense her vulnerability.
Jackie was transferred to the Ojai Raptor Center because they are able to rehab raptors. Ojai update from 4 hours ago – “On Saturday, July 18, Adult Bald Eagle 26-519 arrived at Ojai Raptor Center as a transfer from San Dimas Raptor Rescue, after being found grounded in Big Bear and unable to fly. When I viewed this video last week from July 12th, I thought that something didn’t seem right with Jackie’s behavior. She seemed desperate for food, and she didn’t want to give the fish to the eaglets. That seemed so contrary to how a mom eagle usually is. She ate that fish like she was starving. I wonder if Jackie was already getting weak and having trouble fishing at that point in time.
Everything it’s possible her age, her health…
They said that Jackie is 14 years old and that bald eagles can live in the wild until about 30 years old. I think that Harriet in SWFL was 28 or 29 years old when she flew off to chase an intruder and then disappeared. I’m glad that the vets are closely examining Jackie. Wish it didn’t take so long for toxicity test results. That delays possible treatment if a toxin is involved.
I saw that too, Mary NJ, and put it together with her being all over Shadow for food for herself, as well as seldom visiting the nest. So unlike our Jackie.

Hi Karen, I don’t understand. I haven’t figured anything out. The lab test results should tell us what this illness is from. Until then, it’s just a big mystery. We can speculate what may have contributed to the decline in good health, but it’s just a guess based on some observations.

Jackie is being treated for injuries she got into with 2 other eagles.. they are pretty sure it is Jackie.. prayers for her recovery and be out flying to her family🙏🙏❤️
