Big Bear Eagle Cams – Jackie & Shadow

Watch the Big Bear Eagle cams live from Big Bear Lake, California. These high-definition cameras follow Jackie and Shadow, the resident bald eagle pair, as they defend their territory. They court, rebuild their nest, and raise their eaglets high above Big Bear Valley.

Jackie & Shadow history

Breeding season usually starts in the fall, with courtship flights and stick-carrying in October and November.

For some reason, I never expected that Jackie and Shadow would be affected by any of the problems or illnesses that have plagued other bald eagles. They were just protected somehow. Up high in a pine tree, next to a river, surrounded mostly by squirrels and ravens (as far as we usually saw), no onslaught of persistent eagles/owls wanting the territory, no highway tempting RK hunting (that i ever saw), having a loving and caring organization watching out for them — and recently fledging 4 eaglets, which ended the dry spell. What more could the 2 majestic lovebirds ask for?… Read more »

I feel so many emotions Karen Marie. One is anger. Why not a miracle for our beautiful sweetheart queen Jackie and Shadow. What’s happened to miracles???
Yes, I agree, this will never stop hurting. Still hurting over F-23, and so many innocent creatures. Oh, Jackie, you will always be soooo loved.

Maybe it happened to remind us all that life is precious, to appreciate today and to never take tomorrow for granted. There’s a really neat saying, “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift…that’s why they call it the present.” 🎁 Hugs to you, Lisa.

Lisa, I was so hoping and praying for a miracle too. We are so lucky to have been able to follow Jackie and her beloved Shadow. When i get to Heaven, hopefully, i hope i can see Jackie, with her newest set of wings. Meanwhile, I will be watching videos of her, over and over, and her life story. 😍

There is no place on earth where raptors are protected from danger. There are natural causes that can affect raptors. Things such as: ticks (avian babesiosis), mosquitos (west nile virus), mold in the environment (aspergillus fungus), bacterial infections, avian flu virus, etc. can harm eagles. Two years ago at the Kisatchie nest, two female adults died in the same year. The nests there are next to a beautiful lake with lots of trees in a National Forest. They found that one female died of lead toxicity. Hunting is allowed in areas of the forest. Hunters use lead shot, and the… Read more »

And mercury poisoning, wind, hurricanes, tree rot, fishing line, hooks, lures, weights, power lines, some hunters, wind turbines, shoreline construction, logging, agriculture, drones, aircraft. Some nests are safer than others.

Yes, some man made dangers in natural areas too. Years ago, I drove from Los Angeles to visit Palm Springs, CA and I passed by San Bernadino. There were lots of big wind turbines on the hills outside San Bernadino. Big Bear is in San Bernadino County. We can’t see what is in the surrounding areas when we are viewing just a small part of the landscape.

This is truly heartbreaking… I also can’t stop crying. It has been hard for me to find the words, and all of you have been posting exactly what I am feeling, hoping and praying. This is my first eagle tragedy. I know it is nature. I hope they can find a cause , and I hope she didn’t suffer. Beautiful Queen Jackie. My heart is breaking..💔😪

It must have been difficult for her, a wild bird who is used to flying freely in the skies, to be in captivity and confined to an oxygen compartment, in addition to all of the medical tests she endured, but her suffering is over now.

Hi Tina, It is so sad 😭I think that they will wait until they have all of the rest of the results for a confirmation of the cause. If there is a necropsy, it will take weeks or a month to hear what caused it. If it was caused by something like a parasite, virus, fungus, or bacteria, that is a danger in the the natural world. If it was caused by something humans did, then I hope that a change can be made for the better to prevent this from happening.
