The eagle in the front looks like HD1. Brown spot on the top of the head and band on the leg. The adult in the back is perched on the branch that Shadow likes to perch on, but I can’t tell if it is him or another eagle.

Jackie, you and Shadow were loved by so many you can’t imagine. My heart is broken on hearing that you have passed on. Watch over Sandy and Luna and guide them through life. Also, watch over Shadow who loved you so much. Your nest will never be the same. You and Shadow show so much love and cared for your little ones no matter what was thrown on you [deep snow, rain, and heat] but you made sure the babies always came first. You are no longer suffering and the gods took you and made you well. Soar high and… Read more »

You are so right with it all, Shadow lives her so much – his everything. I heard him getting hoarse a week ago or so, from calling to her. And the nest will definitely never be the same. 🤗❤️

Thank you for the warning, Karen. I have no desire to watch anything horrible like that. It’s hard to believe that someone would even want to video tape that moment or that OJAI authorities would permit it.

I don’t mean to e heartless, but if there weren’t any cameras to watch this wildlife….how would you all be? Yes, it is very sad, and they did try to save her- little too late. Not knowing how sick she was for a long time. The nature in us want everything to be ok with wild life, but that’s what it is WILD! I think the cameras are great, but when something bad happens you have to remember it’s wild!
I’m not a heartless person, but realistic.

Birds hide it when they are sick. It is instinct whether captive or wild. It is supposed to be a defense of appearing weak to predators. I know this, I’ve had a bird in my living room since 1983. People get very attached to their pets, but also the wildlife they see for years and years. Their personalities emerge and you witness their struggles and triumphs. People are human, with human emotions and feelings, just like we are told that wild creatures don’t have our emotions. Our humanism needs to work through our emotions, and we do that by sharing… Read more »

No it doesn’t. We are always told not to not anthropomorphism animals, so let us be humans. We don’t hurt the wildlife because of the emotions we risk because we want to watch them. It is our choice. I fully realize to watch, I have to go through these things, and I still do it! Maybe I am dumb but it is my choice. And I have company.

Yes, good points, Debbie. Just because we can’t control them doen’t mean we shouldn’t care.

I know you aren’t heartless or uncaring. It is hard to understand we are also realistic. We know we will endure these emotions from time to time. Some have been watching for 16 years. But we are drawn to it. We choose to watch the joy even if we know we will have to live through the sad. Sorta like getting a golden retriever puppy. We know in 10-14 years we will experience an intense grief, but we do it anyway. When it happens, many go and get a new puppy as soon as their emotions allow. And do it… Read more »

So true, Debbie! All the moments of joy that animals provide greatly outweigh the few moments of sorrow.
