Monarch butterflies are carrying solar-powered tracking tags lighter than a grain of rice. One tagged monarch has already traveled more than 1,500 miles, crossing Lake Michigan along the way.
More than 600 million birds were in flight across the United States during one night in late September as fall migration surged. Most traveled under the cover of darkness while millions of people slept below.
