KNF Bald Eagles

Kincaid Lake, Louisiana

You are watching a mating pair of Bald Eagles named M2(male) and F3(female). The nest and PTZ cams are located in a Loblolly pine tree near Kincaid Lake in the Kisatchie National Forest. The cams have been set-up and are maintained by the U.S. Forest service. Nesting usually starts in December followed by egg laying in mid to late January.

E-3 17:00 – Still 5 fish left in the nest. Couldn’t see how the last feeding went because the mom was blocking the view.

16:45 The oldest one pushed itself up out of the bole next to the mom and got all the rest of the bird. The little one tried to get out of the bole, but it was too difficult to push up from that side, so it got nothing to eat. No food left.

E-1 12:54 – 13:23 No one brooding the chicks and it is windy and 35 degrees. Good thing there is sun shining on them. As of 15:24, no food delivered. Not enough food being brought. 😦

I don’t think she will until they get a bit older. Usually the dad hunts for food while the mom broods in the first few weeks. Then as the eaglets get older where the mom can leave them by themselves and they require a bigger amount of food, she will help hunt as well. I think that the SWFL nest is different than normal because M15 wanted to brood and feed E26, so that gave F23 time to hunt. I think that caring for the two eaglets on his own when Harriet disappeared made him grow to like nest duty.

There was a bonk of the youngest at 10:16, but their head popped right back up to eat. Saw the oldest one eating at the later feedings. By the time Andrea finishes feeding the oldest, they are getting cold and she has to stop to brood, so the young one isn’t eating much. But since it was just hatched and it ate at the 10:15 feeding, it’s requirements for food are probably not as much as the older one at this point.

At the 1:30 feeding , the oldest ate first, and as soon as the youngest tried to get some food, s/he got bonked. The youngest was determined to eat so s/he climbed up out of the bole to get away from the oldest, who was even bonking the youngest one’s back as the youngest was climbing up.

The youngest was then fed for 10 minutes straight, and it’s crop was huge like a golf ball. The oldest tried to push up out of the bole but was unable to climb out, so the oldest one stood there watching the youngest one eating. The oldest didn’t get any more food at that feeding.
